Another Chance - Book One

Chapter Five: The Christmas Party

By Zarek Dragon

"We have no idea. Someone found her last night lying on the ground when they came out of church. So far, she hasn't woken up." Dusty looked like he was about to pass out. "Come inside and have a seat. I'll get you some tea."

"I'll be in in a minute. I need to call Zac," Jim stated.

"Just come on in when you're ready," The lady told Jim. She led Dusty into the house and got him seated.

"Zac, this is Jim. I don't think Dusty and I are going to make it. Something has happened to Cheyenne," Jim started then told Zac what he knew. Zac told Jim that he'd be there as soon as he could.

Jim went in and sat beside Dusty. "So, what are the doctors saying?" Jim asked.

"They're not saying much, just that she was sexually assaulted and severely beaten. You must be Jim. Cheyenne has told us a little about you," the lady stated.

"I'm afraid to ask," Jim chuckled.

"Don't be. She thinks highly of you. She had been telling us about this boy who just started school and didn't want to make any friends until Dusty kind of forced him to. Then she said what a sweet guy he is. Also says that you can rival Dusty in academics."

"I don't know about all that," Jim smiled. He could hear Zac's truck pull up. "That's Zac."

"Can we go see Chey?" Dusty asked.

"I'm not sure she'd want you to see her like she is, but then again, maybe you're just the presence to bring her around. You're in no condition to drive, though. Jim, can you drive him?"

"I don't have my license, but I'm sure Zac wouldn't mind."

Zac was at the door when Jim said that. "Mind what?"

"Taking Dusty to the hospital to see Cheyenne," Jim stated.

"Sure, the three of us can fit in the truck, then I'll see if we can't get your car there somehow," Zac offered.

"We can take his car there when we go. We're just waiting for Cheyenne's father to get home from work," Cheyenne's mom offered.

Dusty handed his keys to Cheyenne's mom, then Jim led him to Zac's truck. At the hospital, Zac told the front desk who they were and asked if they could see Cheyenne. The nurse was hesitant, but she called the detective handling the case. The detective wanted to talk to Dusty before he saw Cheyenne, he said that he'd be right there.

Fifteen minutes had passed before the detective showed up. He apologized for the delay and asked if they could go somewhere more private. Dusty explained that anything he had to ask or say, he could in front of Jim and Zac. The detective told Dusty that he's not a suspect, but they needed to question him to be thorough. Dusty nodded his head that he understood.

The detective, seeing how distraught Dusty was, kept his questions simple. After he was done, he walked up to the nurse. She told Dusty that they could go in the room, but only two at a time. Zac told Jim that he should go in with Dusty and just be there for him.

Upon walking in the room and seeing Cheyenne, Dusty almost collapsed. Jim helped him get in the chair closest to Cheyenne's bed. Dusty grabbed Cheyenne's hand. "Oh Chey, who did this to you?" Dusty cried. He held her hand close to his face and sobbed uncontrollably.

"Dusty?" Cheyenne gasped. Dusty looked at her face. Though she was badly beaten, she still looked beautiful to him. Jim ran to the nurses' station to let them know that she woke up.

"Chey, I'm here," Dusty said.

Cheyenne tried to talk, but was having difficulty. A couple nurses and a doctor came into the room. They tried shooing Dusty from the room, but Jim insisted that Dusty could barely walk in his condition. Reluctantly, they let Dusty stay but told him under no condition was he to get out of the chair he was sitting in until they were through.

The hospital staff finished examining Cheyenne and said that everything looked good. When the staff left, Jim came back into the room and Dusty looked at Cheyenne, "I love you."

This brought a smile to Cheyenne's face and she mouthed, "I love you also."

Dusty asked if she wanted a sip of water to quench her throat and she nodded her head. Jim looked at Dusty, "Zac and I are going to head out. Cheyenne's family are going to bring your car, but if you need anything, give one of us a call."

"Thanks, man. I am so glad you are a friend."

"Yeah, well, you kinda forced me to be, but I'm glad you did," Jim smiled.

As they headed towards Zac's truck, Zac held Jim's hand. "Do we have that kind of love?" Zac asked.

"I hope we do. I know that I'd be devastated if anything happened to you," Jim said.

"I could see all kinds of emotions going through Dusty's eyes. I could see how much he loves her, even looking the way she does right now. I could see the pain he was feeling for her. I could see the anger at whoever did this. And whoever did better hope that the police find him before Dusty does. All I could see from Cheyenne was pain with a slight hint of love for Dusty. I've heard that some women push those that they love away when they've been attacked, but Cheyenne seems more drawn towards Dusty. I hope that we never go through anything like this, but I really hope that we don't push away if it ever does happen."

"I have to agree," Jim said as they got to the truck. "Can we stop at a flower shop? I'd like to send some to Cheyenne."

"Only if we can send them together," Zac said with a smile.

"OK, but if it's from both of us, we have to go big, and maybe include a stuffed animal."

"We'll see what they have. You thinking teddy bear or what?"

"I don't know until we see what they have. If I don't like any of their selections, we may have to go buy one and see if they'll add it," Jim stated.

"There is a build-a-bear beside the florist. I've heard that they've sent stuff from there on several occasions."

Jim and Zac walked into the florist and something caught Jim's eye right away. He walked over and Zac followed him. "Can I help you?" a young man asked as he walked up to them.

"We want to send flowers to a girl in my class. She's in the hospital," Jim stated.

"And were you wanting to send one of these stuffed dogs with the flowers?" the young man asked.

"Yeah, I was thinking either the yellow or black lab. She helped get me two puppies a few weeks ago and they look almost like these two."

"Well, they are six dollars each, or you can get two for ten dollars," The salesman suggested. "But if you get two, you'll want more flowers."

"We are wanting to go big, so perhaps we will do both," Zac said. Jim smiled.

The salesman suggested that they send a potted plant of flowers instead of cut flowers as they would last longer. Jim and Zac agreed and picked out some beautiful mums. Then the salesman wanted to know if this would be for delivery or if the boys would pick them up. They opted for delivery. When the salesman quoted a price, Jim pulled cash out of his wallet and Zac pulled out a debit card.

"Let me take the cash, first," the salesman suggested.

"If it would be easier, I can just put the whole thing on my card and he can give me the cash," Zac suggested.

"Either way is fine with me," The salesman said as he took Zac's card. Jim handed his cash to Zac.

After everything was taken care of for the delivery, they headed back to the truck. "If you're still wanting to go riding, we can," Zac offered.

"Yeah, I need to do something to get my mind off of Cheyenne. I can't believe someone would hurt her like that."

"This world is full of crazy people. We may never know who did it or why. I'm just glad that they didn't kill her."

"So, Christmas is coming up. You and your mom have any plans?" Jim asked.

"As a matter of fact, we do. My mom told me about them right before we left for school." Jim looked down with a disappointed look on his face. "Apparently, your mom invited us to come to your house," Zac added with a smile. Jim raised his head and smiled back.

"That's what I was going to suggest if you didn't have plans. Mom beat me to it."

Zac pulled into the ranch's long drive. When he got to the parking lot, he pulled into his usual spot. Jackson came out of the office. "How's your friend, Cheyenne?" he asked looking at Jim.

"She was beaten pretty badly, but she'll be alright. She looked terrible," Jim started to cry and Zac put his arm around him.

"Important thing is, she's young and the physical wounds will heal rather quickly, I suspect. Her emotional and mental wounds may take a while and need some help. I'm heading to the florist, would you like for me to send some flowers for you as well?"

"Thanks for the offer, Jackson, but we already sent some." Zac said holding Jim tight.

"OK, see you after bit if you're still here. While I'm gone, think of some ideas for a Christmas party. I'd like to have it, maybe, on the twenty-first. The Saturday before Christmas. Employees and their family and friends are all invited."

"You get a tree yet?" Zac asked.

"Sure did. It's in the new barn waiting to be decorated. Decorations are in the office if you have time."

"We were going to ride horses, but I think decorating the tree will lift our spirits more. You fine with that, Zac?" Jim asked.

"I think you're right. Nothing lifts a sad spirit like decorating a Christmas tree."

"When you're done, I have presents in the office to go under it." Jackson stated.

Jackson left and Jim and Zac headed to the office to get the decorations. With boxes in tow, they headed for the new barn. When they walked in, they saw the biggest tree they had ever seen. It was easily over twenty foot tall. "I don't think we have enough decorations." Jim said with a chuckle.

They did their best to evenly decorate the tree and when they ran out of decorations, it still looked somewhat empty. Zac pulled his phone out. "Jackson, we used up all the decorations that were in the office. This tree is so big that we need more."

There was a pause as Zac listened to what Jackson told him. "Yeah, there were plenty of lights and surprising, they all work. We just need ornaments and tinsel, or something. I'm thinking maybe a couple boxes of ornaments would do for the tree, plus some decorations for the barn as well."

"Yeah, I know where you keep it. I'll put the receipt with it when Jim and I get back." Zac closed his phone and looked at Jim. "We are going to go buy decorations. Jackson said to try and keep the cost below five hundred dollars, but get whatever we thought we needed."

Zac and Jim got in his truck and headed out. They were talking about what kind of decorations they wanted and Zac wasn't really paying attention to his speed. A sheriff car got behind them and flipped on his lights. Zac pulled over and pulled out his phone. When he could see the deputy was close enough to hear him, he flipped open his phone and said, "Scotty, two to beam up, we may have attracted some indigenous life-form."

The deputy walked up and smiled. "Cute, I like that. Have any idea how fast you were going?"

"To be honest, sir, no I don't. We were chatting about Christmas decorations for the Ranch tree, and I neglected to look."

"You were doing fifty-eight, and this is only a forty-five zone." The deputy informed him.

"Yes sir, I know it's forty-five, I just neglected to watch my speed." Zac said.

"Well, you brought a smile to my face, so how about I bring one to yours. Consider this a verbal warning and watch your speed. Have a Merry Christmas and be safe."

"Thank you, sir. And Merry Christmas to you, too." Zac said. The deputy walked back to his car and pulled away as soon as he was in.

"Man, you got lucky." Jim announced.

"Tell me about it. Seriously doubt something like that would work again." They went on to the store and started getting the decorations that they thought they needed.

Heading back to the ranch, Zac kept a close eye on his speed and when he passed the deputy who had pulled him over, he saw the deputy give him a thumbs up. They got to the ranch and went back to decorating the tree and barn. Zac put the credit card and receipt where Jackson normally kept them.

With the tree decorated, they grabbed the present to put under the tree. Being nosy, they looked at all the names on the presents. Neither one of them found one with their name on it. There was something for all the other employees, but nothing for them. "Do you find it odd that there's no present for either of us here?" Jim asked.

"Maybe, but I'm betting that Jackson knew we'd be putting the presents under the tree and didn't want us to get any ideas what he was giving. The way he treats us, there's no way that he would purposely leave us out." Zac suggested.

"I believe you're right, and I know Jackson wouldn't do anything to hurt us, but I am a little hurt seeing everyone's present but ours." Jim stated.

"Just relax, come time for the party, I'm sure he'll have a present for us." Zac assured. "And if it makes you feel any better, I have a present for you."

"Just you being with me is all the present I really want." Jim said.

"Well, I can't return what I got for you, so you're gonna have to accept it as well." Zac stated.

"Fine, but only if you kiss me." Jim said smiling.

Jackson walked in as their lips touched. Jim jumped. "Hate to see how you react to kissing at the altar whenever they approve gay marriages in this state." Jackson chuckled.

"That would be different. I wasn't expecting anyone to come in right then." Jim stated in his defense.

"So, when is your last day of school before Christmas?" Jackson asked.

"Wednesday, next week, the eighteenth," Zac replied. "Then we go back the sixth."

"So you get two complete weeks off. Those two weeks, you're allowed up to forty hours if you want them. Christmas day, we won't be open and I'm have ranch hands that live on the grounds who already volunteered to take care of the horses, so don't come in that day."

"Well, we put all the presents under the tree for you." Jim said hinting. "Hope we made ‘em look good."

"They look fine, but I think you missed two. No worries, I'll take care of them later." Jackson said with a smile. Zac grinned at Jim.

It was the last day of school before Christmas break and Cheyenne was out of the hospital but wouldn't return to school until after the break. Dusty had spent every chance he could being with her. It was obvious to everyone how much he loved her. On this last day of school, a kid dressed in camouflage approached Dusty. "How's that slut fag loving girlfriend of yours?"

Dusty balled up his fist and looked at the kid. "What did you just say?"

"You heard me. I'm just sorry that she survived. All you fag lovers and fags should be stoned to death."

Jim put his hand on Dusty's shoulder, "He's just trying to provoke you. I got his picture and we can show it to Cheyenne to see if she recognizes him."

"Aww, isn't that cute, your little fag friend trying to keep you from fighting," the kid continued to taunt.

"At least I have a friend, where are yours? I bet your momma, or sister, whoever gave birth to you, had to put a steak around your neck just to get a neighborhood dog to even consider getting close to you," Dusty said.

The kid took a swing but with his martial art training, Dusty was easily able to avoid getting hit. A teacher saw the whole thing and took the kid to the principal's office. He looked at Dusty and just gave him a warning. He said that since Dusty just moved out of the way, he wouldn't be in trouble, but he might want to stop by the principal's office to give his side and Jim should go as a witness. Dusty acknowledged that he would and Jim just nodded his head.

Classes went by quickly, most of the teachers didn't believe in giving homework over the holiday break and the ones that did gave class time to get it done. Classes after lunch were more like a party than a classroom. After their last class, Dusty and Jim met and went to the principal's office. The principal informed them that the police were called because the kid confessed to attacking Cheyenne. Dusty's jaw dropped and he started to cry. Jim immediately pulled Dusty to his shoulder and held him. "I also want to warn you, he said that if he gets bail, which I doubt, he's planning to finish the job and kill the two of you. He's definitely not all there," The principal advised.

"With him making comments like that, what are the chances that he'll be given bail?" Jim asked still holding Dusty.

"Not very likely. I know that you came to give your side of the story, but I don't think I need it. Just be careful, understood?"

"Thank you, sir," Jim said as he walked Dusty to his car.

Zac saw them walking out and ran over. "Is everything alright?"

Jim explained everything that went down to Zac and Zac asked Dusty if he were alright to drive. "Yeah, I think so. I want to go see Chey."

"I can drive you there, if you want, then one of them can drive you back to get your car," Zac offered.

"No, I'm good, but thanks. You and Jim go have some fun."

"If you don't mind, I'd like to go see Cheyenne with you," Jim stated. "I'm sure she'll be relieved hearing he confessed."

"And I'll follow so that Jim and I can leave and let the two of you be alone," Zac said.

"You two have been really good friends. I'm glad Jim met you, Zac."

"Yeah, so am I. After my dad left, he was the one who made me feel whole again. I think we were meant for each other."

"I have to agree. Since I met Zac, my life has done a complete turnaround. Well, between him and you practically forcing me to be friends," Jim said with a smile.

The boys drove over to see Cheyenne. Jim showed the kid's picture to her and she started to shake. "He's one of them, but I think there were three. My memory is still kinda foggy for that day, but I seriously believe there were two others with him."

Dusty moved beside her and held her. He whispered to her telling her that the others will be caught. They have one and hopefully, the police will get him to give up the other two. Jim and Zac took that as their cue to leave. They wished Cheyenne the best and headed out the door. Dusty whispered a thank you to them.

Zac drove to the ranch and Jackson was coming out of the office. Two guys were with him. "Boys, I'd like you to meet Cade Joshua Brubaker and his partner, Dalton Reese. They own the ranch that I told you about."

"I've heard a lot about the two of you. Jackson talks about how great the two of you are all the time," Zac said as he shook their hands.

"My friends call me CJ and we kid Dalton about his initials and call him Doctor. I don't know what you heard, but about us being great, we just try to treat people like we would want them to treat us," Cade stated.

"Yeah, I've not heard as many stories as Zac, but I've heard enough. Basically, Jackson describes you as generous, loyal and one who would have any of your friends' back if they needed it. To me, that is greatness."

"That's a nice definition, young man, Jim is it?" Dalton said.

"I take it, Jackson's been telling you about us, too," Jim said smiling.

"Oh yeah, he obviously thinks the world of you two. With all the people he has working for him, we only know about the two of you. I think he'd adopt both of you, if he could." Jim and Zac smiled.

"What can I say? After my boyfriend, you four mean the most to me," Jackson confessed.

"If it's alright with your moms, would you boys like to have dinner with us? My treat, and they're welcome to come also if they like," Cade offered.

"Only if you promise to tell us about when Jackson was working for you," Zac said with a grin.

"Head into the office and call your moms, while I tell them what NOT to discuss," Jackson chuckled.

Zac pulled out his cell phone and said, "We can call right here. I have a full bar and unlimited minutes."

"Looks like he has you there," Dalton said with a grin.

"Fine, you boys stay here, we'll go back in the office," Jackson said.

"No, I want to hear what their moms have to say," Cade stated, "Besides, I'm getting hungry. It was a long drive bringing you that mare."

"Fine, but if you tell any embarrassing stories, I may have to do something."

"Embarrassing? Dalton, were you ever embarrassed by anything Jackson did?"

"Nope, not at all, you?"

"Can't say I was, either," Cade added.

"OK, we talked to our moms, and they have no problem with us going out. They trust Jackson whole heartedly, but they decided that they were going to go do something and won't be joining us," Zac informed them.

"Good, let's go eat. Jackson, you drive and take us to the best steakhouse this side of the Mississippi," Cade tossed the keys to his SUV.

Dinner was going great, Cade and Dalton were really friendly guys and Jim could see why Jackson thought the world of them. Jim couldn't eat his entire steak and asked for a box to take the remainder home. When everyone was done eating, Cade slipped something to Jackson. Jackson looked at it and his eyes went big. "I can't accept this? I'll never be able to pay it back."

"It's not a loan. Consider it a Christmas present or an investment. You're wanting to add a rescue ranch to your property. You have the land, and this should help make it happen."

"CJ, you are too generous, I don't know what to say except thank you," Jackson was almost in tears.

Zac looked at Cade. "So, you haven't told us anything about Jackson, yet."

Cade looked at him and smiled, "There really isn't much I can tell you. He was a hard worker, but he did tend to flirt a lot. Aside from that, he's a really great guy that I am glad to have as a friend." Jackson started to blush.

Dalton added, "Remember that guy Zack kept trying to hook you up with?"

"Yeah, he moved here with me. He's interning at a law office and we share a nice house," Jackson piped in.

"Yeah, other than Brandon, Zack seemed fairly successful at matchmaking."

"Maybe that's ‘cause Brandon is straight," Jackson chuckled.

"Or Brandon is happy just being good at what he does."

"So, this was your last day of school for the holiday break?" Jackson asked looking at Jim and Zac.

"Yes sir. We are free for two weeks," Jim said with a grin.

"Good, I've heard a lot about you and this palomino of yours. I'd love to see you ride him," Dalton chirped.

"Well, from what I understand, you might be disappointed. I don't do dressage, I am strictly cowboy," Jim proclaimed.

Dalton and Cade looked at each other and simultaneously chimed, "Dusty would like him."

"Well, it's getting late, it may be only seven here, but I'm still on Eastern Time and it is nine there. And Dalton and I still need a place to stay."

"We have a spare bedroom, I'm sure my mom wouldn't mind," Jim stated. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed his mom.

"I have a spare room at my house, too." Jackson threw out.

"Thanks, both of you, but…" Cade started.

"But nothing, my mom says that if you pay to stay somewhere, she'll break your legs. Either you're staying with Jackson, or us."

"I've seen their spare room, it's bigger than mine, but you're welcome to mine just the same."

"I don't want Jim's mom coming to break my legs, so I think we should stay there," Dalton added to the conversation.

"Then, I guess we'll drop Jackson and Zac off back at the ranch and you can drive us to your place, you do have a license?" Cade asked.

"No, but Zac lives across the street from me. You can follow him. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac, and our yards actually touch."

They hopped in the SUV and drove back to the ranch. Jackson went in the office and Jim and Zac got in Zac's truck. As they pulled to the end of the cul-de-sac, Jim got out. Zac parked his truck in his drive and walked over. Jim showed Cade where to park. "Dude, you have a nice house," Dalton and Cade said as they got out of the SUV. "This is only a three bedroom? They must be massive bedrooms." Cade added.

"They are, but I must warn you, the guest bedroom has 2 twin-size beds. We can move them together, or you can use my room and I'll sleep in the guest room. I have a king-size bed."

"No, dude, we're not putting you out of your room. We can sleep in the guest room." Dalton stated.

They went into the house and were more impressed than they were outside. Mrs. Bolt's décor definitely had a western theme. Horse head lamps, holsters hanging on the wall with non-functional pistols, there is an old kiddy saddle in the corner on a stand. Pictures, rugs and other items that definitely made you think western were nicely placed. Above the fireplace was a picture of Jim's dad dressed ready to ride. A Winchester was mounted below the picture.

Jim led his two guests upstairs to the guest room. He was kind of surprised when he found another king-size bed as well as his old twin-size bed in there. He hadn't been in the room since they moved in, nor did he see the bed his mom had bought. "Well, guys, I guess we don't need to move the beds together. Mom told me she was getting another twin-size, but I guess she changed her mind."

"This is the guest room?" Dalton asked. "This is bigger than many master bedrooms, I've seen."

"Yeah, when the house was built, I understand that the owner was wealthy and they had only a son, so they only wanted three bedrooms. Master bedroom was theirs, of course, and the room in the back of the house, which is now Jim's room, was their son's. Third room was the guest room. Each room has its bath, so you needn't worry about getting dressed or anything if you need to go during the night." Zac stated, almost like he was trying to sell the house. You could tell his mom is a realtor.

"So, how long are you staying?" Jim asked.

"Already trying to get rid of us?" Cade joked.

"No, but I'm sure Mom will want to know so she can get groceries and plan meals."

"We're only here for a couple days, we need to get back home so we can spend Christmas with Yoda," Dalton said.

"Who's Yoda, your dog?" Zac asked.

"Yoda is our son, it's his nickname. One of the boys thought he looked like Yoda when he was younger. We thought the trip would be too much for him, but now I wish we would have brought him along," Cade stated, "Christmas here would be awesome."

"Yeah, but Dusty and Zack offered to watch him, so I'm sure he's being spoiled while we're gone," Dalton added.

"Well, I hope you guys visit often, and bring some of the gang next time. I'd love to meet your Zack and Dusty," Jim said.

"We'll see what we can do," Cade said. "I'm sure they'd love to come see Jackson and this place. Now, as for groceries, tell your mom not to worry about that. Least we can do is get the groceries. What do you like to eat?"

"Not much I won't eat except green beans or peas. I also don't care for instant mash potatoes; they need to be real. I really love asparagus, broccoli, or Brussel sprouts for veggies, and I love corn. As for meat, I'm good with any meat that I can think of."

"OK, so green beans, peas and instant mash potatoes, got it," Cade said with a smile, "We'll go grocery shopping after we leave the ranch tomorrow."

Jim heard his mom come home, so he led the guys downstairs to meet her. "Mom, this is Cade and Dalton. And you already know Zac."

"Well, I've only heard one or two stories about you guys. Jackson must really like you and he's a really great guy. You're welcome to stay as long as you like," Heather said.

"Kinda got surprised with the beds in the guest room. Was expecting two twins," Jim stated.

"That was the plan, but when I got yours, there was a buy one get one special going, so I figured I might as well get a second king."

"That makes sense, and makes things easier too," Jim said giving his approval.

After a little more ‘light' conversation, everyone decided it was time to go to bed. Zac spent the night so he wouldn't have to walk across the street. He and Jim had long quit wearing boxers to bed. Jim nestled against Zac and could feel Zac's cock pressed against his ass. "If you decide you want to, there is lube in the nightstand on your side," Jim whispered.

"Thanks for the invite, but for now, I'm good, maybe in the morning," Zac whispered back.

Morning arose and Zac grabbed the lube. He was feeling horny and Jim's ass was inviting. "Jim, are you awake?"

"If you're planning what I think you are, no, but I couldn't think of a better way to wake up," Jim responded.

"Well, then I guess, I need to wake you up. I wasn't going to do it if you were asleep, but since you seem eager." Jim could tell from Zac's voice that he was smiling. Zac started pushing his cock up Jim's ass. They've only had sex a few times since they camped out, so Jim was still very tight and it still hurt some, but at the same time, Jim enjoyed feeling Zac cum inside him. Zac tried being as gentle as he could because he didn't want to hurt Jim any more than he had to.

"I think you're getting better at this, Zac. I want to have your baby," Jim said teasingly.

Zac sped up a little and asked Jim if he were alright. Jim stated that he was and Zac continued. Wasn't long before Zac shot his load deep into Jim's ass.

Jim and Zac each put on a pair of shorts and headed downstairs. They were planning to fix breakfast for their guests, but were surprised when they saw Cade and Dalton fixing breakfast for them. Dalton was sitting a plate of ham steaks on the table as the boys got to the dining room. Cade had several plates with two eggs sunny-side up, a plate for each person. There was also hash browns and juice on the table.

"Hope no one minds what we're having. I ran to the store and picked up a few things," Cade stated.

"No, I think everyone will be happy. Here, Zac and I came down to fix breakfast for you guys and we're pleasantly surprised," Jim said smiling.

"What smells so good?" Heather asked as she walked into the dining room.

"Our guests made us breakfast," Jim responded.

"So, you're never allowed to leave now," Heather said with a smile as she took a sip of coffee.

"Unfortunately we'll be leaving in two days. Next Christmas, we might try to bring the family. I'm sure they'd love to spend Christmas here," Cade replied.

"After these two get dressed," Dalton started pointing at Zac and Jim, "We'll head to the ranch. I'd really like to see your palomino since I've heard so much about it."

"When we're done there, we'll swing by and pick up some groceries. We know Jim likes peas, green beans and instant mash potatoes," Cade kidded. Everyone chuckled at the faces Jim was making.

"I was thinking about getting some asparagus, baking potatoes and steaks for dinner tonight," Heather said.

"You've invited us into your home, we'll pick them up," Cade told her.

"Aside from that, if you're getting the groceries, feel free to get whatever you would like to have," Heather stated.

When breakfast was done, Jim and Zac ran upstairs, showered and got dressed. They came downstairs, both were wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Jim's was a dark blue and Zac had on a green one. They grabbed their coats as Cade was suggesting that they all go in his SUV. Zac didn't mind not using his truck and saving gas, so they all headed for the SUV.

Pulling into the lane that leads toward the ranch, they saw smoke. Cade sped up to see what was burning. As they approached the barns, they could see smoke coming from the office. Ranch hands were busy putting out the fire, but it looked like almost a total loss. "Where's Jackson?" Zac called out.

"We found him unconscious, he's in the barn waiting for an ambulance," one of the hands stated, "He was lucky that they knocked him out before he got inside. Kind of surprises me, though."

"Maybe they didn't think they could get him if he got inside. And if the door was still locked, they didn't want to try and guess which key to use," Cade suggested.

"Jackson, Josh and I are the only ones with keys, so the door probably was locked. So somebody did this, it wasn't an accident of any kind?" Zac asked.

"No, this was deliberate. We're just glad that they stopped with the office. Let me show you something," the hand said as he headed toward the barn.

Zac, Jim, Cade and Dalton followed the hand. When they got to the barn, the hand pointed at the barn wall. Spray-painted was a message, "The girl was just a start.Side of the Barn All fag lovers should burn!"

"If they think fag lovers should burn, why'd they leave Jackson outside the building?" the hand asked.

"Are the police and fire department on their way?" Cade asked.

"A detective arrived just before you did. He said that he's the one handling the attack on Cheyenne."

"Good, maybe he can use this to get some answers," Zac stated.

"Well, I'll definitely see what charges I can add, but we can't charge Jerome for this fire. Being in police lockup is a pretty good alibi," A man dressed casual said.

"Yeah, I can see that," Dalton stated.

Jackson came out of the barn. A few hands kept telling him that he should stay laying down until the ambulance came and checked him out. He insisted that he was fine other than a massive headache. Jim looked at him. "I'm sorry, Jackson, I feel like this is all my fault."

"Nonsense, you didn't do this. Whoever did is at fault. Even if they did it for whatever reason concerning you, they are at fault."

"You have insurance, right?" Cade asked.

"Yea, but they'll have to investigate and know that I didn't do this before they'll cover the loss. In the meantime, I can use a corner of one of the barns as an office."

"I'll expedite my report to your insurance company to speed things along," The detective said.

"In the meantime, I'll call some friends and see what we can do about getting the office rebuilt. I know some people who'll build it and let you pay them when your insurance company makes good on your claim. Or you can use the check I gave you, and then just put the money back when the insurance comes through," Cade suggested.

"Well, just make sure no one touches anything until the fire marshal completes his investigation. I suspect that they'll discover the accelerant used is very common amongst the farms and ranches around here, unfortunately. They may have even used stuff from this ranch," The detective advised.

"Totally understandable," Jackson said.

The ambulance pulled up followed by a couple fire trucks and the fire marshal. Jackson was reluctant, but finally allowed the medics to look him over. They said that he probably has a slight concussion, but should be fine and didn't need to go to the hospital unless he started feeling nauseous, or worse. The fire marshal looked around what was left of the office and after several minutes walked over to Jackson.

"Good thing you weren't inside. From a quick glance, diesel was definitely used as well as some fertilizer."

"Diesel instead of gasoline?" Zac asked.

"Yes, son, while gasoline burns easier, diesel burns hotter. And it's waxier so it's harder to wash off. Also, seeing how a lot of the tractors around here run on diesel for efficiency, it's easier to obtain and go unnoticed. I would say that the chances of catching who did this are slim at best, but I'll get with the detective and compare notes. Whatever leads he may have, we'll work together. Did you give him a statement yet?"

"Not yet, but the only thing I can say is that the cowards hit me from behind." Jackson stated.

"They did leave a note spray painted on the barn." Dalton said. They showed the fire marshal the note. He took a few pictures of the note and the remains of the office.

The fire marshal told Jackson that he had enough to write his report and clean up can start any time. The only thing salvageable were the contents of the fireproof safe. As for the computer, Jackson was smart and made backups onto external hard drives every night and those were kept in the safe.

"I feel bummed, now," Jim said.

"Well, don't. You let them make you feel bummed, they win," Jackson said, "They can do whatever, we can't control them, but we start having the reaction they want, we let them control us."

"Yeah, but…" Jim started.

"The only but I want is yours going about what you would have been doing if they didn't cause this fire. Got me?" Jackson demanded.

"We were going to show Dalton and Cade Gold and Silver," Zac said.

"Then do it. I'm going to call my insurance company to get the ball started on my claim," Jackson stated.

"I'm going to call Sarge, and get some prospective guys to run security for you. Whoever you have now isn't enough," Cade said.

"In their defense, no one was expecting anything like this, but I would love to have someone like Sarge to head up Security," Jackson said.

"That's just it, Sarge would have been prepared for something like this," Cade stated.

Cade made the call and wrote some names and phone numbers down. He handed the list to Jackson. Then Jim and Zac led Dalton and Cade to where the horses are kept. Dalton whistled when he saw Gold. "Beautiful animal," Dalton stated.

"That he is, and he's been my friend since he was born," Jim said looking down.

"Look, Jackson told us about what you've been through. Obviously, Gold is happy to be reunited with you, don't feel sad that you had to give him up when you did. You were what, fourteen or just turned fifteen at the time? You didn't have any control over it," Cade stated, "Be happy that the two of you are back together."

"All my friends have been saying that to me, but hearing it from you, I needed that. I am very happy that he's back in my life," Jim said raising his head and smiling.

"So, let's saddle up and see what you can do," Dalton said.

The boys grabbed two other horses for Dalton and Cade. They took the four horse to get saddled. It didn't take long to get the horses ready as all four had been doing it for some time. Jim was the first to mount and Dalton asked him to ride around the ring and show what he can do.

Jim suggested that they go to the arena if they really wanted to see what Gold was capable of, so they mounted up and rode over to it. Jim put Gold through some paces and then did some barrel racing. He was pleased with his performance and it was obvious that Cade and Dalton were impressed.

Jim rode over to where the guys were. "You planning to be in a rodeo? You looked good barrel racing," Cade asked.

"Naw, I just like riding. Besides, to get a professional card, you have to be eighteen," Jim answered.

"Well, let's hit the trails and check out this ranch. Haven't been here since Jackson talked about buying it and asked for our input," Dalton stated.

Zac and Jim took them on a trail and they chatted for a while. They talked about the gang back at Second Chance and the potential for Another Chance. Cade said that he suggested that Jackson build a house on the ranch, but after the fire today, unless security was beefed up, he's not sure it would be a good idea.

Rest of Cade and Dalton's visit went by uneventful. They talked more with Jackson and better security was being arranged. Clean up had begun on the office and plans were being drawn up for not just an office, but Jackson decided to follow Cade's advice and build a house with the office as part of it.

Saturday afternoon, Cade and Dalton said their goodbyes and headed home. Snow started falling as they pulled out of the ranch. "They really like you boys. They said you remind them so much of their family," Jackson stated.

"I like them, too. I can see why you think so much of them, but I'm glad we have you instead," Zac said.

"I have to agree. While I'd be happy to be part of their family, I'm happier counting you as a family member," Jim stated.

Jackson felt a tear forming in his eye. "And I'm glad to have you boys as part of mine, but I have a few people to interview and you need to be getting home. Don't forget the party tonight. We're starting at eight."

Zac and Jim got in Zac's truck and headed for their houses. As they pulled in the cul-de-sac, they started laughing. Their moms were working together to build a big snowman. Zac parked the truck and they got out and started helping. Heather looked at Jim, "I like those two, next time they visit, make sure they know they'll be welcome here again."

"I will, Mom, but Jackson is building a house on the ranch. He's having guest rooms built just for when they come visit."

"Well, I'm sure they appreciate that. Anyway, who's up for some hot cocoa when we get the snowman done?"

"Sounds good, Mom, but remember, Jackson's Christmas party is tonight. We'll need to start getting ready right after," Jim responded.
