Cory and Sean followed the guard into a room in the back of the auditorium. "Masters Cory and Sean Short to see you Sir." the guard announced in a clipped formal voice.
"Thank you James; I will take it from here." the room's lone resident replied.
"Whoa! Jon Bon Jovi!" Cory whispered in shock.
Jon stood up and extended his hand. "Cory and Sean Short in the flesh? Glad to meet you guys! Can I have your autographs?"
Cory and Sean exchanged lost looks. " Our ..... autographs? Why? We're nothing like you." Sean gasped.
"You guys are only the two most famous teenagers in the entire universe!" Jon replied with a grin. "I'm just some guy who makes people happy by singing to them."
"Yeah, right." Sean giggled as he relaxed. "I think you have it backwards though; you've affected a lot more people than us."
"Surrreeee ... I've made a few people happy for a short time, while you guys have affected the lives of millions of kids indirectly in a way that will stay with them the rest of their lives. Now hows about some autographs?"
Sean smiled. "Okay, you win. Don't mind Cory; he's kinda still in shock just meeting you. I'll bet if you touch his shirt he'll never wash it ever again!"
Jon reached out and placed a hand on Cory's shoulder. "Is that true Cory?"
Cory looked over at the hand on his shoulder and managed to utter a "Uh huh!" as his eyes went wide.
Jon chuckled. "You can chill Cory; I'm no different than you. Sit down before you pass out already!"
Cory nodded numbly as he took a seat. Sean giggled as he watched his partner. "Congratulations Jon, this is the first time I've ever seen Cory speechless! Wait until the guys hear this one!"
Jon smiled. "You mean he's not normally this quiet?"
Sean shook his head. "No way! I'm the quiet one of the two of us!"
"You couldn't tell it today." Jon chuckled as he squeezed Cory's shoulder. "Earth to Cory; come in Cory."
It took about five minutes to get Cory to finally recover enough to speak. After they had all exchanged autographs, they sat down to talk.
"So Cory; obviously you're a fan." Jon stated.
"How could you tell?" Sean replied with a giggle. "Was it the drool or the comatose stare?"
"Bite me buttbreath!" Cory replied as he blushed a deep red. "I just wasn't expecting to actually meet Jon."
"I could tell." Jon chuckled. "You should have seen me when your Mom called to set this up. I've been following all the news about you guys but never expected to actually meet you."
Cory just shook his head in wonder. "Why is everyone making such a big deal about us helping a few kids? I know it's a big deal that we are part of Ambassador Sarek's family, but Mom helps a lot more kids than we do."
Jon smiled. "I can explain that. You guys seem to make headlines by taking on the cases nobody wants to admit exist. They're not swept under the rug anymore, and law enforcement finally has someone to turn to when CPS is either too slow or ignorant. That is what makes you guys so special; you've taken on the worst part of society and are winning. I'm actually going to debut a new song tonight that I wrote just after reading about one of your escapades; I'm planning on having you guys up there when I sing it."
"Really? Kewl!" Cory replied. "I guess I see where you're coming from though. I just try to do what Mom always said to do when you see someone in trouble. Are you really gonna let us come up on stage?"
"You better believe it. I've heard you guys do a pretty good job of covering one of my songs; I'd like to see if you're as good as your Mom says you are." Jon replied with a grin.
"Awww mannnnn!!!" Cory groaned. "She didn't!"
"She did." Jon chuckled as he watched Sean bury his face in his hands.
"I'm sooooooooo gonna get her for this!" Sean moaned.
Jon put a hand on Sean's shoulder. "What are you worried about? It's only about eighteen thousand or so people watching!"
"Oh, is that all .. thanks a lot!" Sean groaned as he tried to hide even more. Cory just stared in shock. "You're really serious?"
Jon nodded. "Yep. I plan on, debuting a new song tonight, and you guys up there will lead right into it. Hearing about you guys gave me a song idea; and I'm going to donate the proceeds to give you a hand. It's only fitting that you're around to hear it played publicly for the first time."
Cory smiled as Jon's switching of topics to helping 'his' kids brought him out of his bout of star struck fan. "For real? That'd be awesome!" He then tilted his head. "You know; if you want to, you could do the release recording live. We have our own professional mixer tech, and I'm thinking of having a concert of sorts pretty soon to celebrate a project we just started."
Jon smiled. "You know, that sounds like a great idea!" Just then the sound of Nickelback starting their set took over the background. "In fact, I know a few guys who might want to join me in helping out." he added.
"Sweeeet!" Cory replied. "Here's the deal ...."
".....Dead or aliiiivvvveee ...." Jon sang as the lights went to black. He smiled to himself in the dark of the stage as he waited for his guests to be escorted to the stage. The crowd got louder and louder as they waited for the concert to continue. As soon as he saw the shadows of the pair next to him, he tapped the microphone to signal it was time to begin the rest of the show.
The lights flashed brightly with each drum beat as "It's My Life" began. Jon started the lyrics as every light on the stage lit up.
"This ain't a song for the broken hearted ..... A silent prayer for faith departed ...."
Cory and Sean leaned in and joined in the vocals. "I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd ... You're gonna hear my voice as I shout it out loud ..."
They made it through the chorus, then Jon began his version of the second verse.
"This is for the ones who stood their ground ..." Jon put his arms over the boy's shoulders as he sang the next verse. "For Cory and Sean who never back down ..."
They finished off the song with Jon having one boy under each arm, then Jon made his announcement. "This next song is dedicated to Clan Short, especially the two young men who have joined me here on stage tonight! Cory and Sean Short, thank you for caring; everyone else 'Have A Nice Day'!"
Why you wanna tell me how to live my life?
Who are you to tell me if it's black or white?
Momma, can you help me try to understand
Is innocence the difference 'tween a boy and a man?
My daddy lived to die, that's just the price that he paid
Sacrificed his life just slaving away
Ohhh .. if there's one thing I hang onto .. that gets me through the night
I ain't gonna do what I don't want to; I'm gonna live my life
Shining like a diamond, rolling with the dice
Standing on the ledge, I show the wind how to fly
When the world gets in my face, I say...
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Take a look around you; nothin's what it seems
We're living in the broken home of hopes and dreams
Let me be the first to shake a helping hand
Anybody brave enough to take a stand
I've knocked on every door down every dead-end street
Looking for forgiveness and what's left to believe
As they had planned in the back beforehand, Cory and Sean sang the second chorus.
Oh, if there's one thing I hang onto, that gets me through the night
I ain't gonna do what I don't want to; I'm gonna live my life
Shining like a diamond, rolling with the dice
Standing on the ledge, I show the wind how to fly
When the world gets in my face, I say...
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
As what was supposed to be a guitar solo began, Cory spun and grabbed a six string that had been set up behind him. He nodded at Richie with a huge grin, then they launched into the 'guitar war' they had discussed while they were listening to the demo before they came onstage. As they finished, Richie and Cory headed to one microphone as Sean and Jon hit the other.
Ohhhhh ....
Ohhh, if there's one thing I hang onto, that gets me through the night.
I ain't gonna do what I don't want to, I'm gonna live my life.
Shining like a diamond, rolling with the dice,
Standing on the ledge, I show the wind how to fly.
When the world gets in my face, I say..
Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day.
When The world keeps trying, to drag me down,
I've gotta raise my hands, gonna stand my ground.
I say, hey
Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day
Have A Nice Day

Five hours later:
Cory led Sean through the front door of their house, both still glowing with huge smiles plastered to their faces. After the concert, they had joined the members of Bon Jovi and Nickelback in a post-concert celebration. They had been surprised when they were asked to stay after the rest of the fans had left. They got to meet the families of the band members, and had a quiet get together where they made friends with the people they had never expected to meet in real life.
As they started through the house, the glow of a television from the family room got their attention. They walked over to the doorway, and froze as they looked at the scene in front of them. Austin was sitting on the couch, head tilted to the left as he slept peacefully. Timmy, Ricky, and Paul were cuddled together into a ball on his lap, while CD and Calen had taken up positions under each of Austin's arms. All five boys were sound asleep, snoring softly.
Cory reached his arm around Sean and gave him a squeeze. "Look at our sons. I wish this could last forever; we really do have our own little family." he whispered in Sean's ear.
Sean smiled and whispered back. "I know; that's so awesome. I hate to do it, but Austin's gonna be sore if we don't get the munchkins into their own beds."
Just then Austin yawned and turned his head towards the boys. "Dad? Pop? You're home?" he asked sleepily.
Cory and Sean quickly walked over and stood where they could speak without waking the rest of the boys. "Yeah; did you have any problems with your little brothers?" Sean asked.
Austin giggled sleepily, still trying to wake up. "C'mon Pop; you know these guys can't cause trouble. They were great."
Cory giggled back. "Yeah sure; you're just tryin' to protect them. You're gettin the big brother routine down really good. Let's get these guys to bed so you ain't squashed in the morning."
A few minutes later, they had the kids in their beds and Sean, Cory, and Austin were sitting at the kitchen table drinking sweet tea. "How was the concert?" Austin asked.
"Great!" Cory replied. "We got to meet Bon Jovi and Nickelback; they're all really kewl!"
"He says that now; you should have seen him when we got there!" Sean giggled. "Your Dad was totally speechless! All he could do was sit there and drool!"
"Bite me Sean!" Cory replied. "It's not every day you have Jon Bon Jovi ask you for your autograph!"
"He didn't!" Austin giggled.
"Yeah he did." Sean replied. "Bad part was he was serious; your Dad here has become a star without knowing it. I don't know how though."
Austin smiled as Cory turned bright red. "I know how; and it's both of you. I know of a lot of guys who owe you their lives; my brothers and me included."
As Cory was trying to form a response, Javyk appeared at the end of the table.
"Oh, I hope I'm not interrupting, this will just take a minute" Javyk said softly as he turned to Cory. "Council Crafter, I'm just about to actually take off for the moon but I'm still shy of a few members for the shuttle crew. We don't have any more people to spare at the Ark compound so Cyna suggested that I come and talk to you and see if any of your people would be willing to fill the other positions; we need three more people."
Cory stood and smiled. "Not a problem Javyk; they were taking turns trying to prove that I'm more than I think I am. What positions have you already filled?"
"Well, I'm flying the shuttle," replied Javyk. "I have Matyas on Ops, Syris is along for security, and for the moment I have Kendall on navigation. Although I'd rather have Kendall on engines."
"What are your plans while you are up there? Or maybe I should ask what do you expect to find?" Cory replied.
"Just going up there to repair a few of the older satellite systems," said Javyk. "And just because it's up there I wanted to see what's left of the Interpretation Archive as well."
"I think you need to have Council Intelligence involved fully then." Cory replied. He pulled his communicator out and keyed the mic. "Cory to Kyle."
"Go ahead Cory." Kyle replied sleepily.
"Hey bro; you think you and your cuddle buddy could get over to my place within the next minute or so?" Cory asked.
"Yeah, I guess so." Kyle replied. "Wazzup?"
"Archive business." Cory replied cryptically.
"Okay; we'll be right over." Kyle said, now fully awake.
Cory turned back to Javyk. "Kyle should be here in a minute; he lives above the pool."
"Floating above it?" Javyk said while giving Cory a strange look. "I didn't think humans were using architecture that was THAT strange. Did I miss something?"
Austin giggled. "No way; there's a second and third level above the pool. Floating rooms does sound kewl though!"
"Oh, okay I suppose that makes sense," said Javyk. "Do you have anyone else to suggest Council Crafter?"
"Ummm, Dad?" Austin interrupted.
"Yeah Austin?" Cory replied.
"I know you and Pop wanted to spend some time together, but shouldn't Pop learn how the Founder shuttles fly?"
Cory looked over at Sean then back at Austin. "You're right Son." He turned back to Sean. "Babe; this is one of those times when what I want doesn't matter."
Sean nodded. "It does matter, but I can tell what you think by how you said it. I argued with you last time you tried to give me a push to do what was best for me; I'm not making that mistake again. Javyk, would you have a problem with teaching a certified Federation Shuttle pilot how a Founder shuttle is piloted?"
"As long as you don't have a weak stomach and have steady hands," said Javyk. "I guarantee, though, that your 'Federation Shuttle Certification' doesn't hold up against a Founder Shuttle unless your shuttles can rotate on about thirty-six different axis."
"Oh shit!" Kyle groaned as he walked through the door. "That's all he needs; he's bad enough already!"
"Bite me Leech!" Sean giggled. "Javyk, as long as I have a shuttle around me I have no problems with my stomach."
"It's good to see you again Kyle," Javyk said to Kyle before turning back to Sean. "That shouldn't be too much of a problem; heck, the only window to the outside is digitally projected on the inside of the shuttle so it isn't really a window at all. It fills the front end but not enough to make you think you're not in a shuttle. It's all enclosed."
"Not a problem there Javyk; I'm always up for learning to pilot advanced tech." Sean replied. "If you don't mind a few questions as we're going I'd like to join you."
Kyle and Ty looked between everyone. "Hey Javyk; wazzup?" Kyle asked. He then turned to Cory. "Okay bro; what was so important that you interrupted a cuddle session?"
"Yeah." Ty added. "Kyle had a really good sleep stiffy going!"
"I'm taking a trip to the moon compound to fix a few systems that Ark has underground up there as well as checking out an old archive," Javyk answered for Cory. "I need three, no wait I have Sean now, two people to fill the rest of the crew. The shuttle fits eight people but it's always recommended to have at least seven for a moon trip, just in case."
Kyle nodded. "That sounds good; as long as Ty has no problems with it, I'm in."
"You ain't going anywhere without me!" Tyler giggled. "Besides, if we're on the moon maybe we can cuddle without my big brother interrupting us!"
"You want a little brother Javyk?" Cory asked with a grin as he put his arms around Kyle and Tyler. "All I ask is I get to see him on weekends and holidays!" He then pulled the two boys in tightly. "Take care of Sean for me, okay guys?"
Kyle and Ty smiled. "Sure bro." they chorused.
"Are we ready then?" Javyk said as he pulled some device off his belt and handed it to Cory, "That makes Kyle, Tyler, and Sean. Shuttle Luna, that's a total of four on my mark." Javyk looked up at Cory, "Council Crafter, thank you for your help. The device that I just gave you is a communications device that's linked to the shuttle we're in. Once we get to a certain spot Ark won't be able to get a clear signal 100 percent of the time, at the moon it'll be more like 60 percent. This device will at least give us a signal that works 90 percent of the time. Is there anything else that we need to cover?"
"Other than Kyle and Ty's butts I think that's it." Cory replied. "I'll keep communications to a minimum unless something important comes up."
"Alright then, Luna the word is given," said Javyk quickly. Almost instantly Javyk, Sean, Kyle, and Tyler vanished from the kitchen.
Austin looked at the suddenly empty spots. "Dang! He didn't waste any time did he?"
"Nope." Cory replied. "I get the feeling Javyk is all business. Let's hit the sack; that was a great wrap up for a long but fun day."
Cory awoke to find himself surrounded in the bed. CD and Calen were cuddled to his left side, while Paul, Timmy, Ricky, and Austin had taken up residence on his right. As he turned to look, he found six sets of eyes watching him. "Hey guys? What happened to your beds?" Cory mumbled.
Paul giggled. "Austie sayed Pop hadda go to work, sos we are gonna keep you comp'ny!"
Cory smiled. "Thanks guys! I love all of you! Let's all hit the bathroom, then find some breakfast."
A few minutes later, Cory walked into the kitchen to find Austin stirring something in a bowl. "What's that?" Cory asked.
Austin nodded towards the heating waffle iron. "Blueberry waffles Dad."
"Sweet! You don't mind cooking?" Cory asked as he walked up and gave him a hug. "You don't have to, you know that don't you?"
Austin nodded. "Mind? I love cooking! It's great having a family to cook for again. Mom taught me how to cook after she rescued me."
Cory wiped a stray tear from Austin's face. "Something tells me that you need to talk. Why don't you make something special for me and your brothers, then the two of us will sit down after breakfast and you can get it off your chest."
"Thanks Dad." Austin sniffled. "I've never had brothers before; now I've got a ton of them. I kinda feel lost."
"I know what you mean." Cory whispered. "I'm still getting used to being a dad; sometimes I just wish things would go back to the way it used to be before your Uncle Mikey was killed, but then one of your brothers seems to notice and gives me a hug. That's when I realize what I'd be missing if things had not went the way they did. You okay with talking about it after breakfast? I'll send your brothers over to Grandma's for a while."
Austin gave Cory a small smile. "Yeah Dad; that'd be fine. Nobody else has ever cared enough to even ask, so waiting for a few minutes more isn't going to matter."
Cory pulled back. "I'm gonna make sure that it does happen." He walked over to the intercom on the wall and keyed it. "CIC, this is Cory."
"Tommy here. Wazzup bro?"
"Hey Tommy. I've got some family business to take care of. Unless the world is ending tell everyone not to bug me, okay? Also, Sean is off-planet, so redirect any calls for him."
"Gotcha bro. Yell if you need me. Tommy out."
Austin looked at Cory in wonder. "You didn't have to do that Dad."
Cory returned to Austin and resumed the hug. "Yes I did; if I don't take care of my own sons, what right do I have telling others how to take care of theirs?"
"But I'm just an android; I'm not like a real kid." Austin replied.
"You've got a soul, you think and feel, you love and hate." Cory replied. "In fact, you don't even hold the record for long life; Nyo's got you beat by over fifty thousand years. In my eyes that makes you just as human as your brothers."
Austin looked Cory in the eyes and slowly smiled. "You really mean that? You DO really mean that! Thanks Dad."
"Thanks for being my son." Cory replied. "You better hurry up and get cooking though; I'd hate to have to call Marc and tell him that your brothers chewed one of your legs off waiting for breakfast!"
"I'm on it Dad!" Austin giggled.
A few minutes later, the rest of the boys had taken their seats around the table. Cory couldn't help but smile as he watched Timmy and Ricky taking turns helping Paul make a mess of himself while eating. "Hey guys, you know Paul might enjoy his food more if it actually made it into his mouth!"
Timmy and Ricky both giggled. "DADDY!" Timmy replied. "We're gettin' it in his mouth!"
"Yeah!" Ricky giggled. "Besides; we promis'd to lick anything he spilled offa him!"
Cory looked at Paul and noticed the expression on his face. "What do you think, little guy?" Cory asked with a smile. "You know you don't have to do stuff just because Timmy and Ricky do it, right?"
"Uh huh." Paul replied. "Timmy told me that. Him an' Ricky are fun. They're teachin' mehow big boy stuff is 'posed ta be insteada the stuff my old daddy did. I like it, they're fun!"
Cory giggled. "Okay; just ask me, Pop, or one of your other brothers if you're not sure about something." He then turned to Ricky. "What about you munchkin? I know you and Timmy spend a lot of time together; how do you feel about having Paul hanging around?"
Ricky smiled as he put a sticky hand on Paul's shoulder. "He's fun! Pauly's my lil brother too; Timmy an' me's gotta teach him how to be a real Short boy! I getta teach 'im all the stuff my big bros taughted me!"
Cory giggled at his enthusiasm. "Okay; but if you guys need a break, just ask Paul to give you some alone time. Paul, if they ask that it does not mean they don't like you anymore, it just means they need a little time with just the two of them. Everybody needs time like that, okay?"
"Okay Daddy!" all three chorused before breaking into giggles.
Cory turned to CD and Calen next. "What have you guys got planned for today?" he asked.
Calen smiled. "We kinda wanted to see if Russ would mind us bringing the rugrats over. Deej and Tanner want to try a new song out that Uncle Nicky has; we thought Paul might have fun helping us out with it."
"That sounds like a good plan. Give Russ a call after breakfast and get his okay; let me know what he says. Paul, when you are there Russ has the same authority as me, so do what he says, okay?"
"Yes Daddy." Paul said in awe. "We really get to go with the big boys?"
"Yep." Cory nodded. "Just pay attention to what they tell you, you'll have a lot more fun that way."
After breakfast, CD and Calen made the arrangements with Russ to allow their younger brothers to join them. Shortly thereafter, the three youngest boys, now somehow fully clean, joined them and within a few minutes they headed out the door to begin their day.
Cory led Austin into the family room, and took a seat in the very same chair that used to be in the family room in Des Moines. When he had found out that he and Sean were getting their own house for their family, he had begged his Mom to let them have the chair he had spent so much time in with Mikey.
Cory motioned for Austin to take a seat on his lap. Austin smiled as he carefully positioned himself on Cory. "Nobody has held me like this in forever; thanks Dad." Austin murmured.
Cory wrapped his arms around Austin. "Get used to it kiddo; I'm here anytime you need me." he whispered. "Would you like to tell me a little bit about your Mom?"
Austin settled in to Cory's chest, gaining the strength to tell his story from the love he was feeling emanating from Cory. After a few minutes of silence to gather his thoughts, Austin began speaking in a low voice.
"Mom and my Father had been working together to develop my series when Vision decided to close down. They had just finished my image and were preparing to load it into my new body when everything was halted. Sharon, that's my Mom, thought that I deserved to live instead of ending up on a scrap pile. I guess Dad was really into the corporate scene at the time, 'cuz she snuck in when he wasn't around. She brought me on line at night, then snuck me out wearing some of Dad's clothes that he had kept in the lab just in case he needed them. Dad almost caught us that night; just as we were about to leave out one of the doors he came up to the guard station. Mom had me turn around real quick and we went out the back way. That was the first and only time I saw my father until you rescued me; unless you count all of the pictures of him Mom had." Austin paused for a minute then continued. "Mom made sure I got to do all the stuff that kids 'my age' liked to do; but she knew that someday she'd die, so she did everything she could to prepare me for it. She knew what grief does to androids like me, so she made sure I read everything she could find about teenagers recovering from the loss of a parent. She also taught me how to cook and other stuff so that I could take care of myself if I needed to. I guess she figured that since she was about 50 when I was rescued from Vision she wanted to make sure I didn't give up like the other units were doing. She always said that she considered Marc and I her two favorite 'kids'."
Cory gave Austin a good squeeze. "I think she had great tastes; you and your father are both awesome in your own ways. Is talking about her helping?"
"More than you know Dad. It's almost like I'm reintegrating the memories as we're talking. I don't know why, but as long as you're holding me I seem to be able to talk about it."
Cory shifted so that Austin's head was on his shoulder. "I guess you better keep talking then; one of us with missing memories is one too many."
Austin wiggled in to make himself more comfortable in the new position. "When Mom put me together, this body didn't even have a serial number on it. That made it really easy for her to arrange for me to become part of her butler's family after she died in 1990. Ironically her butler was named James; when she died James became my owner. He immediately gave me to his son Salem as a wedding gift, which was cool with me since I kinda grew up with him as much as possible for an android. Salem and Kris had a daughter, Julie, soon after they were married, and I got to be a big brother to her. In 1995, Brandon was born; that's when I learned how much fun little brothers can be."
Cory looked at Austin with confusion. "Wait; earlier today you said you never had brothers before."
Austin nodded while silent tears slowly trickled down his cheeks. "I know; I didn't remember Brandon until I just said something about him. There's something weird here; it's like I can't remember a bunch of stuff from that time until after I talk about it. After I say something I can remember everything up to that point, but if I try to think ahead of what I'm saying I just get gray general memories. It's almost like something happened to my head and now I'm restoring it all."
"I kinda know the feeling son." Cory replied softly. "Let's keep going; I don't want you to miss anything important because the time ran out on whatever is triggering this."
"Okay Dad. Things were pretty kewl there; I was treated just like one of their kids and got to take care of Julie and Brandon a lot as they grew. Just after Brandon learned to walk, he got into the habit of getting out of bed as soon as our parents were asleep and climbing in to cuddle with me. After a couple of months of trying to convince him otherwise, they gave up and moved him into my room. Even though he still had his own bed, from that day on he always climbed into my bed at bedtime and cuddled up to me as soon as I went to bed. Two weeks ago, we had just gone to bed when I heard someone break the front door down. I had Brandon hide under our bed and told him to be quiet no matter what happened, then laid back down and pretended to be asleep so that it looked like I was the only one in the room. I almost wet myself when I heard silenced gunshots coming from the other rooms, then the door to our room opened and some guy yelled 'I found IT'. The next thing I knew our room was filled with guys who bound and gagged me. One of them commented 'The other rat must be staying at a friends; this must be his lucky day!' as they picked me up and hauled me out to a truck sitting in the driveway. They musta gassed me or something, because I woke up with a headache in some kinda medical room where I heard them saying they were gonna wipe my memory. I thought real fast and remembered Mom telling me about something they had experimented with to help androids who lived really long lives. She wasn't sure if I had it, but it was something her and Marc had talked about. Pretty much it made it so that I could back up any memories I no longer had immediate need for into a compressed file in my permanent core memory. I was able to key the memories so that it took certain events to unlock and restore them. Since it looked like I had been picked up by slave traders, I backed up my personal history then keyed it so that I'd have to meet Marc first, then would have to be relaxed with a new parent before they would unlock. I started with the most recent stuff so they wouldn't find out where Brandon was hiding and worked my way back, deleting as I went. I was about half way through my time with Mom when they began the attempt at wiping me. I think the self-preservation stuff that Dad added musta kicked in, because their wipe didn't do anything but shut down some of my internal circuits. They didn't bother to see if it worked, instead they tried to change my features with plastic surgery so I couldn't be identified by a picture. Some of the false stuff they tried to put into my head as memories musta took; I'm getting memory conflict warnings now and the backup is overwriting what was there. My body started overloading as soon as I came out of surgery; when they saw what was happening they dumped me in the alley you found me in. I was there for about two days; I guess seeing all of the telepathic races walking around must have gave my brain the idea to try that for help since my voice circuits had failed when they tried to wipe me."
Cory could feel the heat coming from Austin as he worked to reincorporate his life. "I think that's enough for now Son; you've unlocked it all, give it time to be put back where it all belongs. Can you give me a description of Brandon and his full name? Where you used to live might help too."
"Sure Dad. He turns nine today, his full name is Brandon Christopher Jacobson, he's a skinny freckled rugrat with green eyes and orange-red hair. We had just moved to Kokomo, Indiana a couple of months before that happened."
"Okay Son, put your head back on my shoulder and take a nap. I'll worry about making sure your brother is okay; you worry about letting your brain heal itself."
Austin leaned up and kissed Cory's cheek. "Thanks Dad; I love ya."
"I love you too Austie." Cory replied softly.
A few seconds later, Austin was sound asleep on Cory's shoulder. Cory engaged his subvocal and mouthed his words so that Austin would not be disturbed.
*Ark? Could you do me a favor?*
<It would matter what the favor requires Cory.>
*I need to find an orphaned child as fast as possible. His name is Brandon Christopher Jacobson. He's turning nine today, has green eyes and orange-red hair. His last known location two weeks ago was Kokomo, Indiana in the United States. Do you have any information which might locate him?*
<According to yesterdays archive of records I have a Brandon Jacobson that fits your description. He was picked up by the local police in the Kokomo, Indiana area. He should still be at the police station but he may not be for too much longer as I am sure they will be handing him over to CPS if they can not find his parents soon. Other then that there is not much more that I can give you... just a second... complements of Javyk and Kendall bringing a system back online as I was speaking I can at least watch the area through a few government satellites until you have a chance to deal with it if you would like. In the meantime would you like me to send the exact location of the police station to CIC?>
*Are you able to bring JJ into this conversation Ark? And would you mind teleporting him to the location once I instruct him on what my wishes are?*
<If that is what you want Cory. JJ, you are on a three way connection with Cory at his request but by no means should you tell Adam to stop. Cory would like to have a word with you.>
Cory couldn't help but to giggle. *Sorry Bro; I need you guys to do a quick recovery. Brandon Jacobson, at the Kokomo police station in Indiana. This kid is Austin's little brother, and right now he's an orphan. You can swap body fluids afterwards; I might even let you use my bedroom.*
*Slave driver!* JJ giggled. *As soon as we're dressed we'll head out.*
*Hurry up.* Cory replied. *I'd hate to see Ark teleport you into the station nude!*
<Is that a request Crafter?>
*Not at this time; but if they ever annoy you then you have my approval!* Cory replied. *Thank you for your assistance Ark; once JJ indicates he is ready you may proceed.*
<As you wish. But just so you know JJ is still listening Cory.>
*I know; now he can't say he wasn't warned.* Cory giggled.
*We're ready Ark; and paybacks Cory!* JJ replied with a giggle.
<Very well, JJ standby. I am disconnecting the three way connection now. Is there anything else you need Cory?>
*No, thank you again Ark from me and Austin. If you get the chance to review the archive of my subvocal transmissions over the last hour you might have interest in some of the events Austin described.*
<Silly boy, when am I not logging what you say? Anyone that has a subvocal on them is allowing me to record what they say if I have a connection to them. I am just not always consciously aware of what is said.>
*I figured that much out already. It would be stupid to not have it that way.* Cory replied seriously. *I know Tyne has said Founders don't kill; what would the Founder punishment be for murder?*
<Why would you want to know?>
Cory kept his emotions in check as he replied. *The boy JJ and Adam went to rescue is all that is left of Austin's previous family. The rest of the family was murdered by some men to cover up their kidnapping and attempt at enslaving Austin. As Austin's parent, it is my responsibility to ensure justice is served on the perpetrators for the safety of Austin and Brandon. I know the methods I used before Tyne was woke up are probably not appropriate for a Council member to use as punishment; if the Founder way is a better way I will make that Clan policy as well.*
<Well the standard Council practice for the crime of murder was generally a complete mind wipe. It requires a Council meeting and the device used must have the entire Council's permission before it will perform the wipe. There are two of these devices, no more were made and the blue prints for them are Council Sealed, not just locked. The only one we have is in the Council Chamber. After a mind wipe it was common practice to then send the person to the Interpretation Archives on the moon to live in the service of the Council. Do note that because it requires complete Council agreement that the sentence was never delivered lightly.>
*I think I like that idea.* Cory replied after some thought. *If the infraction was truly serious enough to consider death for committing the crime, then this is a much better way both for society and the sanity of the ones who otherwise would be executioners. How long before those who kill to protect society become the ones society must fear most? Has Cyna listened in on this; I'd like his opinion as to whether Tyne should be approached with the idea of instituting that for all business Clan or Founder related when it comes to making someone answer for their crimes.*
<Cyna has not been listening, he is currently helping Rylan and Rusty take inventory on what repairs need to be done to the outer dome of my Compound. Would you like me to bring him into this conversation and get him caught up?>
*Please ask him if he is able to break away long enough to discuss this. Thank you Ark.*
A minute later Cyna came over the sub-vocal, "What's up Cory? Ark gave me a quick run through of what you were talking about. This isn't an easy thing to bring back, you know. I mean, you know that the entire Council has to come together to make every judgment right? You can't just say you want it done, you can't convict alone anymore if you want to use this...just a second. Up there Rylan! To the left! Yeah you see it? It looks like we have a crack; yeah it's gonna need patching. I'll have Ethan and Dominic come out to help you. Okay, I'm back Cory. But yeah, I can understand wanting to bring this back considering the reasons you gave but it's not a quick process by any means."
*Should it be quick though Cyna? This is somebody's life that is in one person's hands right now. Sooner or later I'm going to be wrong and execute someone who should not have been. I worry about that every day; this way it is not in one person's hands no matter what punishment the Council decides. I'm not saying every case; just the ones that are so serious that by the current rules death is the only viable sentence.*
"I can see your point Cory; I was just going on your past punishment history is all and giving you a warning that if you use the Council, things will work differently. I just wasn't sure if that's what you wanted or not. Of course not placing that kind of choice in one person's hands is why the Council existed in the first place. No one person should decide the fate of anyone was the thought behind it." replied Cyna. "Until we can get the Council together again though I'll have Josiah start working on holding cells; we don't have any but it sounds like we might need them from the way you're talking. It's up to you though to call the Council meeting."
*Consider it called as soon as Kyle is back on Earth.* Cory replied. *Thanks for your input Cyna; it's great knowing I've got a brother who will help me keep my head straight even if the rest of me will never be close to straight.*
"Anytime Cory," giggled Cyna. "Let me know if you need anything else. I'll be... hey be careful with that Rusty, that can end up sealing your hands together. Yeah, that wouldn't make Tyne very happy. Just take it to Rylan, don't turn it on again please...anyway Cory, I'll catch you later."
*Later bro; have fun.* Cory replied with a soft giggle. *Thanks again Ark; you helped take a major load off of my mind.*
<You are most welcome Cory.>
Cory smiled at the sleeping boy on his shoulder as he whispered "Sleep well Son; your past is not going to haunt you no more. Besides, you have a birthday to celebrate."
Police Headquarters; Kokomo, IN, USA, Earth:
JJ and Adam appeared just outside the local police station. JJ nodded at Adam. "Let's go." Based on what JJ had heard from friends of his father who had grown up in the area both him and Adam were dressed in their full Federation Security uniforms.
They walked through the entryway and turned towards the information desk. They were no more than two feet inside the door when an alarm sounded. As a gate crashed down behind them preventing exit, an overhead page announced 'Energy Weapon detected - Main Lobby'. Within seconds, JJ and Adam found themselves staring down the barrels of at least a dozen weapons of various types.
"ON THE GROUND NOW PUNKS!" a slightly overweight Sergeant yelled.
JJ stared at the man in shock. "Is this how you greet all Federation Security Personnel?"
"You ain't no Goddamn Federation Security PUNK. Now both of you get your asses face down and spread eagled. You have ten seconds to start moving." The Sergeant accentuated his point by cocking the riot gun he was pointing at the boys.
"Sergeant; I am Lieutenant James Richardson and my partner is Second Lieutenant Adam Short; we are both prepared to show identification to prove our identities. You fire that weapon and you'll wake up in a Federation holding cell; that is a promise."
"You are full of shit punk; the Federation don't give kids weapons. Drop or you might be lucky and wake in a hospital. Three seconds."
"Unconscious only Mr. Short." JJ ordered. Adam barely had time to nod his head when the sound of a shotgun going off filled the room. As the buckshot ricocheted off of the boys and embedded itself in surrounding walls and furnishings, a white beam shot from each of the boy's arms and knocked the Sergeant unconscious.
"Who wants to join him?" Adam got out just before an officer to his right started to empty his clip in the boy's direction. As the bullets bounced off of the vicinity of Adam's chest, Adam let loose a yellowish bolt from his arm and the officer dropped to the ground. "Stop that!" Adam pointed towards an officer that was hit by one of the stray bullets. "Get that man a medic; and for Heaven's sake stop firing at us before someone gets killed!"
Three officers nodded at each other and opened fire at the same time, trying to overpower whatever JJ and Adam were protecting themselves with. "Screw this shit!" JJ exclaimed. He dropped to his knees and slammed his fist on the ground. A silver-white bubble of energy quickly expanded from him and knocked every officer that was holding a gun on the boys into the nearest wall, leaving all of them unconscious on the floor. Adam pulled his communicator. "Terra Main Security; Priority One transmission from Clan Short Security, Second Lieutenant Adam Short."
"Proceed with Priority One traffic Clan Short."
"I need a security detail at this location ASAP. The local police department attempted to use deadly force on our personnel upon our entry to the premises. Request Central US Security assume jurisdiction. We need medical teams standing by upon arrival at detention facility for one gunshot wound and multiple electrical stun injuries."
"Acknowledged. We have accessed their building monitoring system. Your support is on their way; my supervisor has reviewed the situation and requests that I inform you that Federation Security will prosecute them if you so wish."
Adam looked over at JJ, who was administering first aid to the downed officer. JJ nodded his assent, so Adam replied "My superior officer accepts the offer. Thank you."
A minute later, the offending officers were gone and the Federation Security personnel began taking over operations. Adam accessed their computer and quickly found out where Brandon was in the building. JJ turned to a nearby Ensign and asked "Would you mind joining us? We are here to pick up a child; originally we were to accept custody under the SHA, but after the 'welcome' we got I'm not going to mess around. This will be a Clan Short extraction."
"I would be glad to Sir." the Ensign replied. His superior came up behind them and asked "How did you cause so much damage Lt. Richardson? And how did you escape injury?"
JJ smiled. "All I can say is it is experimental technology which Clan Short has been chosen to test."
The officer nodded. "Understood. From the aftermath of it, I'm glad I saw it now since the chances of anything that effective becoming general issue are slim. Ensign; you are to stay with Lt. Richardson until he releases you."
"Yes Sir." the Ensign replied as they got directions and turned to head back into the building.
It took about two minutes for them to wind their way towards the back of the building. They walked into an office area and spotted a man sitting at a desk watching a skinny little boy with orangeish-red hair playing on the computer. JJ smiled at the sight, and walked up to the desk. "Excuse me Sir; I am Lieutenant JJ Richardson, Clan Short Security. By any chance is this young man Brandon Jacobson?"
The man looked up at the group and his eyes went wide. "I'm Lieutenant Jack Watson; and yes, this lil' munchkin is Brandon. How may I help you, Gentlemen?"
JJ relaxed at the man's positive attitude. "We have been informed that you were trying to locate Brandon's family. Clan Short has been provided information regarding the events which lead to Brandon being here today; including the status of his family members. At this time, our investigation has led us the point that we believe it would be in Brandon's best interest to be placed under Clan protection."
Jack nodded. "According to what this little angel has told me I'm positive no family will be found. Your reputation as a group actually precedes you; I was preparing to call you to ask for your assistance." He turned towards Brandon. "These are the guys I was talking about. Now do you believe they are kids like you?"
Brandon nodded. "Yeah." he replied in a soft soprano voice. "But I ain't gonna know anyone there."
Adam smiled. "I bet you will. We just rescued an android, and he is now one of my newest nephews. He just had a bunch of surgery done on him; due to what needed done to fix him he looks a lot different than he used to. You look exactly the same way Austin described you though."
Brandon squeaked as his eyes went wide and his jaw dropped to his chest. A few seconds later, Adam found himself sprawled on the floor with a crying nine-year-old boy securely attached to his chest. Adam carefully wrapped his arms around Brandon and softly soothed him.
JJ and Jack exchanged glances. Jack smiled as he said "I think that you have a vote of 'Yes'. If I was to even believe half of what Brandon told me happened, I wish I could be there to take care of the people that did this to his family."
JJ giggled. "No offense Jack; but be careful what you ask for!" JJ pulled a PADD from his waist and looked around. He noticed that the laptop that Brandon had been playing on had a wireless card sticking out of the side of it and his grin became wider. A few minutes later, he looked over to see Brandon had fallen asleep on top of Adam and Jack was watching him curiously. "Sorry, I just had to check a few things Jack." JJ said. "After the welcome we got in the lobby here, you gave me an idea. How would you, your boyfriend, and his son like to move to Orlando? Oh, by the way, I think your boss is sitting in a Federation Holding cell right now, so if you decide to resign just let the Ensign here know. Federation Security has assumed control of this station until the officers who attacked us can be replaced."
Jack stared at JJ. "Did you just offer me a job?"
JJ smiled. "You might say that. Just so you know; I'm Head of Security for Clan Short, so you would be reporting directly to me. I was thinking of a liaison between the Clan and Terran police forces; as we found out earlier some departments have issues with someone my age having the power I have."
"I wonder why?" Jack chuckled. "I'd have to get Fred and Ryan over here to discuss it with them before I could answer."
"I can handle that!" JJ giggled. "One boyfriend and son coming up!"
A few seconds later, the telltale glow of a transporter signaled the arrival of two people. Just as soon as they materialized, the eldest one of the pair dropped the razor he was holding as he exclaimed "What the Hell??"
"Ditto!" the twelve year old next to him added as the soccer ball in his hands fell to the floor and bounced.
"Nice towel Fred!" Jack chuckled. "It seems Lieutenant Richardson here wants to have a talk with you!"
"Dang Jack; you musta won the lottery to land a cutie like that!" Adam giggled.
"Watch it Adam; comments like that will get you stuck sleeping with 'Roo -- WITHOUT shin guards!" JJ giggled. He then turned to the new arrivals. "Hello, I'm JJ Richardson, Head of Security of Clan Short of Vulcan. I just made an employment proposal to Jack and he said he needed to discuss it with both of you."
"You know, there is this new invention called a telephone." Fred commented, barely suppressing a grin.
"It was more fun seeing your face!" JJ replied with a smile. "Besides; considering the fact you share the same career choice I believe you would be working as a team. Basically you would be liaisons between Clan Short and Terran Law Enforcement. You would answer directly to me, and would essentially be considered as associate members of the Clan. Mattering how you work with us, Patriarch Short may decide to offer you full membership; that is something only he can decide in your cases. Ryan would be eligible for full membership if he wishes immediately. The reason I can't promise full membership is that up to this point there is nobody in the Clan over twenty years old; we need to know that you can work with adapting protocol to the situation at hand, something a lot of adults have problems doing."
Fred responded with a small smile. "Jack and I met at the Academy because both of us got into trouble for 'thinking too freely'; something we take turns getting chewed out about to this day. Now you're offering us a job that requires us to do the exact thing everyone says not to do? If Jack agrees, I'm game."
"I think you're forgetting one important vote." JJ said with a nod at Ryan. "What do you think dude? It means moving to Orlando and hanging out with a group of kids that most adults consider strange at best. Most importantly; can you accept being in a group where just about everyone around you is gay? I know your Dad is, but it's different in a large group where being open about it is normal."
Ryan looked at the ground for a second, then replied softly. "I don't think I have a choice after what just happened at practice. Coach saw Dad and Jack holding hands at the game yesterday. He made a big deal out of it in front of everyone. None of the guys would talk to me after that; from the way they were all acting I think they were planning on beating me up after practice."
JJ saw Fred's face beginning to glow red and held up his hand. "Relax Fred, I have an idea. Ryan, it don't matter if you're gay, straight, or somewhere in between; I think you'll fit in fine with the guys back home." He then turned to Adam. "Hon, you think your big brother would enjoy a 'fly by'?"
Adam giggled softly, trying not to wake Brandon. "Let's find out! Hey Mikey!!! You listening bro?"
"After that stunt you two pulled in the lobby I'm staying close by! Be glad Guardian Angels can't have heart attacks; y'all almost gave me one!" a disembodied voice said from somewhere near the ceiling.
JJ giggled. "You love us! You heard what happened at Ryan's practice then?"
"Yes JJ; what devious plan have you cooked up this time?" Mikey replied as he made himself visible, causing Jack, Fred, Ryan, and the Ensign to go into shock.
JJ tried to look innocent as he replied. "I just thought it might teach a lesson if you were to pop into the middle of practice, comment that Ryan has been taken to a better place where there are no bigots, then pop out..."
Mikey interrupted. "You're waayyyy too slow little brother!! Davie was there within seconds of you beaming Ryan out! I don't think he put it quite as nice though; he was giggling something about the entire team wetting their pants before he headed out to check up on Jerry."
"Adam? Is that an angel?" Brandon asked softly through sleepy eyes.
Mikey went over and knelt by the two boys. "Yes I am little one; I'm about to become your Uncle Mikey. Uncle Adam is going to make sure you get to your new daddy safely. When you hear the other guys talking about seeing Saint Mikey you can tell them you've seen me too! I'll be there with you when you meet your new Daddy and Austin; if you need me just say my name."
"Okay!" Brandon said with a smile as he snuggled into Adam.
Mikey smiled and brushed the stray hair out of Brandon's eyes with the tip of one of his wings. "JJ, it's time for you to take everyone to their new home. I'll see y'all later tonight." He then faded out of sight.
JJ giggled as he turned back to Ryan. "You know; I think you might be right. If Davie did what I think he did you going back there might give three quarters of your school a stroke! Mikey is the Saint in charge of protecting gay and abandoned youth, and Davie is his Assistant. Trust me; you don't want to cross those two!"
Ryan really smiled for the first time since his arrival. "I kinda figured that out! I'm in; when do we get to move?"
JJ looked at his watch. "Oh, about a minute or so I'd say. Mom's got apartments in her place for families to stay in that are between homes and are being helped by her or us; once you pick one out we can get all of your stuff down there in no time. Transporters are good for that!"
Jack stood up from his desk, and helped Adam to his feet; Brandon still holding tightly to his new uncle. "Ensign; are you able to accept our resignations?"
"Yes Sir." the Ensign replied. "After what I have witnessed I can certify the reasons behind your resigning are not based on the actions of your former superiors. It is possible that your resignation might be denied and this might be qualified as a promotion; but that is not my decision to make despite recent actions that make it a possibility."
Jack nodded. "If that is the case tell your superiors where to find me. I believe we are ready as soon as Brandon gets down off of Adam."
"You are dismissed Ensign; thank you." JJ said. As soon as the Ensign was out of the room, JJ nodded to Adam. "Don't forget to hand our nephew to his brother when we get there." JJ paused, then said "Ark, I think we are done here. Could you please teleport the six of us to Cory's house? Whichever room him and Austin are in would be great."
<Be glad they are not in the bathroom.> Ark replied before teleporting them out.
Cory smiled as Austin stretched on his lap. "You feel a little better Austin?"
"Yeah Dad; I kinda feel bad about Brandon though; he probably thinks I abandoned him if he's still alive."
Just then six people appeared in the middle of the room. Austin took one look at the group, noticed who was in Adam's arms, and exclaimed "Brandon??!!"
Brandon's face lit up as he scrambled out of Adam's arms and pounced Austin and Cory. "AUSTIE!!! YOU'RE REALLY ALIVE!!!!"
"Owwww ... that's gonna hurt!" Cory groaned. "Obviously Timmy ain't gonna have to teach your brother to pounce, Austin."
Cory glanced over the remainder of the group. "You know JJ; most people would at least let their victims get dressed before kidnapping them. You think you can handle introductions?"
"Bite me Cory." JJ chuckled. "Everyone, the blond being squished in the chair is Cory Short, Patriarch of Clan Short. The big redhead is his son Austin; the little one is Brandon. The guy standing next to me in a suit is Jack Watson; the one in the towel is his boyfriend Fred White. The soccer player over here is Fred's son Ryan."
Cory smiled. "It's a pleasure to meet you. If you would excuse me a minute, I need to take care of some business before I can greet you properly." Cory then gave Brandon's shoulder a squeeze. "Happy Birthday Brandon. How would you like to be part of Austin's new family as a ninth birthday present?"
"Can I?" Brandon asked, staring at Austin for approval.
"You better believe it little brother." Austin replied. "All you got to do is tell Cory yes; he's a pretty powerful guy and all he has to do is say it and it'll be done."
"Who's gonna be my Daddy?" Brandon asked.
"I will; your new Pop is on the Moon right now so it'll be a couple of days before you meet him." Cory replied.
"What if he don't want me?"
"There's no chance of that." Adam giggled. "Sean thinks just like Cory; as soon as he finds out about you he'll ask Cory if you have been adopted yet."
"Really Austin?" Brandon asked, deferring to the one person he trusted.
"Yes little buddy." Austin replied. "This is for real."
Brandon turned to Cory. "Will you be my daddy?"
"All you had to do is ask; consider it official right now Son." Cory replied with a smile. "I'll take care of informing everyone as soon as I figure out what your Uncle JJ got into now! I'll bet if you ask nicely your big brother will take you to meet the rest of your brothers."
"Good luck Dad; figuring out Uncle JJ is like trying to figure out a female! Let's go before things get really strange Brandon." Austin replied.
"You got a point there!" Cory giggled as JJ shot them all dirty looks. Once Austin and Brandon were out the door, Cory turned back to JJ. "Okay bro, obviously since there are three more people than I was expecting coming back with you something's up. You wanna fill me in?"
JJ smiled. "Jack and Fred are going to act as liaisons between us and the Terran Law Enforcement Community. Since I ended up putting about half of the Kokomo police department in Federation custody after they tried to gun us down for walking through the door, I figured it made sense."
"I'm not sure I wanna know. Do you carry a sign that says 'Mess with me, I dare you', JJ?" Cory asked with a giggle. "Jack, Fred; how did JJ explain your involvement?"
Jack smiled. "Pretty much JJ stated we would be associate members of the Clan. We would be working for him handling relations between the Clan and the Law Enforcement Community, giving the areas that have trouble with teenagers being in charge an adult to interact with."
Cory looked over at JJ. "Actually I think JJ had the right idea except for one little point. Associate members? I'm not going to start doing that. If you are going to represent the Clan you need to be full members. Membership is for life though; you actually are part of the family if you accept joining us. It's your choice if you still want to be a part of this. If not, Mom will have no problems with you working for her in Federation Youth Services."
Jack and Fred looked at each other. Fred nodded and Jack turned back to Cory. "I think we'll join the family. I know what you guys do from the other side of the fence and we'd be honored to be a part of it from this side. Besides the fact I think that you can be the positive peer influence Ryan needs."
"Jaaaacccckkkkk!" Ryan exclaimed. "Jeeezzeee, I AM standing here!!!"
Cory smiled. "Okay Ryan, before they embarrass you any further, do you think you can handle being around a group of people who have skills which most people believe don't exist? I'm talking things like telepathy, empathy, telekinesis, direct communication with animals, and some things that there are no names for. On top of that you'd be living with some genetic offshoots of humanity that the rest of the world does not believe exist. I'm totally serious by the way."
Ryan looked at Cory in wonder. "Ooookkaaayyyy .... that sounds weird but it's nothing I can't deal with. I mean, obviously you're not a bunch of vampires or anything."
"Ummmm .... actually there is one ...." Cory replied carefully.
Ryan giggled. "Sweet! I ain't seen none since the Ice Zone! I'm protected, see?" Ryan then pulled off his glove and showed Cory a symbol that seemed tattooed on his hand.
Cory smiled. "I'm sure Brant will love that; he'll probably pick on you since you don't need it around him. Just stay away from the topic of feeding; he's got a serious issue with it."
"I'm in." Ryan replied. "Any family that is able to function with a vampire as a member has gotta be kewl."
Cory giggled. "I'll remind you of that tomorrow after you've met everyone! JJ, why don't you and Adam show Jack and Fred around; get them in the system and make sure the guys in CIC know who they are. Don't forget to introduce them to Mom. Ryan, you can come with me if you want; I'm gonna see what kinda trouble my sons are getting into."
Ryan looked over at his Dad, and smiled when he got a nod in return. "Sweet!"
Cory and Ryan walked into the studio and were immediately motioned by Russ to stay silent. Cory looked through the window and saw all of his sons standing behind Tommy. CD had taken a spot on the bench in front of the piano, with DJ at the synthesizer set up directly behind him. Tommy stepped up to the microphone, and in a soft but clear voice started singing as CD and DJ started playing.
I was walking home from school; on a cold winter day.
Took a shortcut, through the woods, and I lost my way.
It was getting late, and I was scared and alone.
But then a kind old man took my hand and led me home.
Now Mama couldn't see him, oh but he was standing there.
And I knew in my heart, he was the answer to my prayers.
Ohhhhh I believe there are angels among us.
Sent down to us from somewhere up above.
They come to you and me in our darkest hours.
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give.
To guide us with a light of love.
When life held troubled times, and had me down on my knees.
There's always been someone to come along and comfort me.
A kind word from a stranger, to lend a helping hand.
A phone call from a friend, just to say I understand.
And aint it kinda funny that at the dark end of the road.
That Someone lights the way with just a single ray of hope.
All of the assembled boys began singing along for the second chorus.
Ohhhhh I believe there are angels among us.
Sent down to us from somewhere up above.
They come to you and me in our darkest hours.
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give.
To guide us with a light of love.
They wear so many faces; show up in the strangest places.
To grace us with their mercy, in our time of need.
Ohhhhh I believe there are angels among us.
Sent down to us from somewhere up above.
They come to you and me in our darkest hours.
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give.
To guide us with a light of love.
To guide us with a light of looooveee.

"That sounded so awesome." Ryan whispered. "He sings great."
Cory nodded. "That's my little brother Tommy. I've never heard him sing before; he's just getting used to being in a real family."
Russ looked up from his console. After giving the group in the studio a thumbs-up, he turned to his visitors. "Hey Cory! Tommy's been working on this all morning; I think he'll be happy finally. Who's your friend?"
"This is Ryan; his Dad is gonna work for JJ." Cory replied. "Ryan, this is Russ; he shares custody of four of my sons with me and Sean. He's also our resident sound wizard; a lot of the guys like to mess around with music and he helps make it sound right."
"Nice to meet you Sir." Ryan said as he shook Russ' hand. "Just how many sons does Cory have?"
"Just a second; I need a calculator to answer that one!" Russ replied with a chuckle. "Lets see ... there's Timmy, CD, Calen, DJ, Tanner, Beau, Toby, Austin, Paul, and from what I'm told Brandon just joined the club. That makes ten, four of which I share with him. Cory, I've run out of fingers; so stop adding sons already!"
"Russ, you and Sara enjoy the tribe just as much as Sean and I do; besides, there's no way I was gonna leave Austin's brother out of the group."
As Russ shook his head and chuckled, the group of kids came out of the studio and joined them. "Hey bro!" Tommy said as he led the group in. "I see ya done added me anudder neffew! Y'all tryin to be a gittin ur own soccer team a goin?"
Ryan looked at Tommy in confusion. "Ummmmm ... what did you just say?"
"Chill Tommy, you sounded great!" Cory said. "Guys this is Ryan; Ryan, all these guys but the redneck here are my sons. Tommy's my little bro; you'll get used to his accent pretty quick." Cory looked around. "All of you guys sounded great!"
"Thanks Dad." Tanner replied. "We got another one that Austin's been trying, but we gotta wait for Mark to get his tongue out of Zac's ear to do it. Airhead just left to go drag him in here."
"You and Deej ain't much better! I swear you two are glued together." Cory giggled. "Ain't that right Russ?"
Russ shook his head. "Leave me out of this! Last time I agreed with you on something there was green dye in my shampoo; I don't want to know what they'd come up with this time!"
"I didn't do it!" DJ, Tanner, Beau, and Toby chorused all at once.
"Yeah, let me guess, your Mom did it ... like that would happen." Russ chuckled.
Before anyone could reply; the door flew open and Aaron backed in, holding Zac by his shoulders. After a few bounces of Zac off of the door frame, Jamie and Jacob followed; each holding one of Zac's feet. "CORY!" Zac exclaimed. "Can't you control your brother!"
"Nope." Cory giggled. "You're lucky they didn't swing by the pool."
"Don't give them ideas." Zac groaned as he was set on the floor. He shot a dirty look at Jamie and Jacob as they went over and cuddled up to either side of Beau. "Yeah guys; you take me away from my boyfriend so you can cuddle with yours. Really nice."
Cory helped Zac off of the floor. "You can get even later bro; from what I hear Austin needs your help!"
"I know; I'm just giving them a hassle." Zac said, finally breaking into a grin. "I was actually on my way over when they caught up with me."
Ryan finally found his voice. "Zac Hanson? Aaron Carter? Oh my God! Cory? You know Zac and Aaron?"
Cory giggled. "Yeah; Aaron's my big brother and Zac is my friend Mark's boyfriend."
"Uhhh ... O...kay." Ryan replied. "I don't know what the hecks goin on; this is getting too strange."
Jamie giggled. "Just wait; you ain't seen nothing yet!"
"That's what I'm afraid of!" Ryan replied.
Austin shook his head. "Y'all are evil. Let's get this thing going."
It took a couple of minutes for everyone to get their places, then they started adjusting their instruments. CD was on bass, Jamie and Jacob both were on guitar, Aaron and Zac were on drums, and DJ was on the synthesizer.
Russ gave the boys a nod, and DJ began playing the first notes. Jamie picked up the first guitar notes and Austin stepped up to the microphone.
Is it fate or random chance,
How can I decide?
Are we victims of circumstance?
When destinies collide.
Jacob, Aaron and Zac hit their notes right on cue, as the pace of the song picked up.
All the odds are against you;
But somehow you make it through.
You can rationalize it away,
but it all comes down to you.
Half our lives we spend waiting;
For the knock upon the dooooooor.
When it comes, will it be the one that I've been waiting for?
Somebody's out there, somewhere;
Waiting for someone to come their way.
Somebody's out there, somewhere;
I will somehow be somebody's someone;
some day.
Hey yea!
Standing in the shadows
hiding from the light
Reach out in the darkness and hold on for your life
All the fear of the future,
all the loneliness inside
When the moment of truth arrives, hey
You can run but you can't hide
Somebody's out there, somewhere
Waiting for someone to come their way
Somebody's out there, somewhere
I will somehow be somebody's someone, someday
Hey yea!
I can feel it inside me, I've been holding on so long
Something's tellin' me something's got to give 'Cause the feeling's way too strong, too strong
Somebody's out there, somewhere
Waiting for someone to come their way.
Somebody's out there, somewhere
I will make them mine.
Somebody's out there, somewhere
Waiting for someone to come their way.
Somebody's out there, somewhere
I will somehow be somebody's someone, someday.
Somebody's out there, somewhere, someday...
Somebody's out there, somewhere, someday...
Somebody's out there, somewhere...
I will make them mine
Somebody's out there, somewhere ....

"You're my someone!" Brandon announced as soon as Austin came out of the studio. Austin smiled as Brandon wrapped his arms around his waist. "I know little buddy." Austin whispered.
After Lunch:
Cory stood looking out the window at his sons. Austin was sitting with Brandon snuggled under his arm watching Timmy, Ricky, Paul, and Matty play in the sand pit that had mysteriously appeared in the yard sometime during the morning. Cory couldn't help but smile as he looked over the shelter that had appeared at the same time to shield the kids from the sun while they were playing. Cory sighed as the smile left his face and he turned to face his visitors. "We both know why you are here Admiral; it is fortunate that Grandfather Sarek chose this moment to update himself on our status. It's time to cut the crap; when you leave today it's your words that will decide the future relations Clan Short has with the Federation."
Admiral Morrow's eyes widened as he sat back in his seat. "Okay Patriarch Short." he said as he cleared his throat. "Where do we go from here?"
"Lets start with why Section 31 took out a contract on me and my family." Cory stated flatly. "Don't bother denying it; I have physical proof of it. Your response when I last spoke with you proves you know it too."
Sarek raised his eyebrows. "I would be interested in that information myself Admiral."
"Off the record Ambassador?" Admiral Morrow asked, his gaze darting back and forth between the two. "This location is secure, right?"
Sarek nodded once. "My grandson has security measures in place that no Federation technology can penetrate. It is my understanding that nothing is allowed in or out without the knowledge of the Clan Operatives."
"You can go off the record." Cory added. "But if you try to bullshit me don't be surprised if the Council hears the real truth."
"Fair enough." Admiral Morrow sighed. "My affiliation with Section 31 is as a source of information. I guess I'd be classified as a leak." he continued. "I only heard of the contract shortly after your Clan had already taken action. I'm not aware of the reasoning behind the incident, but I can assume they saw something you did as a threat and simply acted on it. I swear, had I known ahead of time I would have done something to alert you since I don't have the power to stop them."
Cory nodded. "Considering that we knew the second the order went out I think you would have been too late. Notify your 'friends' that they have one week to rectify the error and deal with whoever gave that order appropriately. They can notify me through you if they wish; or they can contact me directly once things are settled. Considering that they work for the same goals as me, protecting Federation citizens, it would be in their best interests to become allies instead of enemies. If I have to resolve this I will; trust me, they won't like my resolution."
"I can relay the message, but you have to keep in mind; I'm not one of them other than a source of info." Admiral Morrow stated before the corners of his mouth began to turn up in a grin. "I'd be willing to bet judging by your response and efficiency in shutting down their maneuvers that they will be extremely interested in contacting you now though."
Sarek spoke up. "Admiral Morrow, it would be prudent for you to express my insistence that they respond to Fleet Commander Cory appropriately."
"Fleet Commander??" Morrow choked out. "Did I miss something here?"
"Grandfather?" Cory responded with his eyes wide. "When did I get a promotion?"
Sarek looked Cory in the eyes. "The flagship of your fleet, the Vulcan Combat Cruiser D'Kyr, is enroute at this moment. Three of the ships personnel will stay with the ship to assist you with completing its refit. Additional plans for construction of additional ships are being provided. Your status as Fleet Commander is effective immediately."
"Well then." Admiral Morrow spoke up with a forced smile. "Looks like you won't be requiring as much assistance from me now Fleet Commander Cory. I do hope you trust me enough to still come to me should you ever need assistance though."
Cory looked back and forth between the two men for half a minute before his brain recovered from the overload. "Admiral, while this means I will no longer have to demand transportation at a moments notice, it does not change the working relationship we have developed. In fact it expands on it; now I will be able to assist you when needed just as you will still be able to assist me when I obviously can not be in the area. An example is the Lafayette; while it has helped that Starfleet has made her available recently, Federation Youth Services could make much more efficient use of her capabilities."
"I agree." The Admiral nodded, his smile returning. "Ambassador, if I recall correctly the D'kyr had been retired. Is she space worthy or will Clan Short require assistance or docking to perform her refit?"
"Your recollection is accurate." Sarek replied. "External structural refit and mechanical upgrades have been completed prior to the initiation of the transfer to Fleet Commander Cory. Internal systems will require modification by Clan Short personnel. We have arrangements with the agency known on Terra as 'NASA' to accept jurisdiction over an unused space station which they no longer have need of."
"You've acquired the Phoenix II space station?" Admiral Morrow gasped. "We had internal bets that that station would never be put back into an active status." he mused. "Ironic, it was built to accommodate Starfleet and Vulcan vessels in its day. Other than not being equipped with a berth for the D'kyr's refit I think that is an excellent arrangement."
"I did a report about that station in school!" Cory exclaimed. "Are you sure it can't handle the D'Kyr?"
Sarek nodded. "Your observation is accurate Admiral Morrow. The facilities need improvement to adequately provide for the necessary equipment to complete the refit."
"Can I offer any assistance? I mean since we have drastically reduced the amount of assistance Clan Short will require in the future I believe I can pull some strings to help in the means of equipment or personnel during your setup." the Admiral asked with a smile.
Cory tilted his head. "I think that would be acceptable, Admiral. Considering the size of the D'kyr, it's going to take some pretty specialized docks to work on it. Please understand that the only reason I'll accept it is because I trust that you won't try to hold it over my head sometime in the future. You are one of the few people in Starfleet I trust right now; otherwise you would not be here. Does Starfleet have any docks that size available though?"
"Fleet Commander Cory, Ambassador; I'm pleased to learn that I haven't lost your trust, especially considering this latest situation. I've watched over Patriarch Short since he was a brand new Ensign with nothing but astonishment at his capabilities. As for a dock that can accommodate the D'kyr; I know of four in this sector large enough. Two could become a permanent addition to Station Phoenix. One of those, I can get my hands on right now." Admiral Morrow smiled. "For you and for Fleet Commander Cory, I can have this handled and completed within 48 hours. No strings attached."
"I defer any details to Fleet Commander Cory." Sarek replied. "He has proven that his logic is satisfactory."
Cory nodded with a smile. "Thank you Ambassador. I accept your offer Admiral; thank you for the assistance."
"It's my pleasure." answered the Admiral. "Immediately following this meeting I will see to it that our plans will be carried out. I'll also do my best to establish contact and ensure that your primary intentions are proven as being in the Federation's best interest with all those who should know."
"Nice dance Admiral!" Cory giggled. "I think we've covered just about everything we needed to cover Admiral. Thank you for taking the time to straighten out the 'problem' we were having."
"Dance?" Admiral Morrow laughed in reply. "Call it a misdirected stumble." he continued. "Well gentlemen, unless there are any other topics we should cover; I have a very full dance card back home."
"I fail to understand the significance of dancing on the current topic." Sarek stated with a raised eyebrow.
Cory smiled. "It is a Terran term used to signify discussing a topic without actually mentioning the topic being discussed. By my referencing of that, I acknowledged that I understood he was saying what he was allowed to say and no more."
"I fail to see the logic of such a direction of discussion. One should see the efficiency of simply stating the fact of the limitations embedded within the topic and move to a new topic." Sarek replied.
"Then the topic that isn't being discussed would be discussed. It's a method that involves doubt and confusion to avoid confirmation of suspicion." Admiral Morrow reasoned.
"That is illogical, but I will concur that it is an expected human response to a difficult subject." Sarek said.
"Agreed Grandfather." Cory replied. "But while it may be illogical it is a necessary part of human interaction due to the culture we were brought up in."
"Your point is valid Grandson." Sarek said with a nod. "I must be departing to inform the crew of the D'Kyr of the updated plans for their arrival."
Cory finished winding down the meeting, thanking Sarek for the ship and ensuring that everything was straightened out with Admiral Morrow. Once they had left, Cory went out to join the boys.
"How'd it go Dad?" Austin asked as soon as Cory was within earshot.
"Nothing like what I expected." Cory replied. "Somehow I went in expecting to be told I was full of crap and came out as a Fleet Commander with a flagship on the way. Not to mention the fact that I found out I was right and that things might be able to be ironed out. How've your little brothers been doing?"
Austin nodded at the sleeping boy in his arms. "Brandon's finally relaxing. The rest of the boys have been great."
"Kewl." Cory replied. "Why don't you gather them up and meet me at Grandma's house? I need to fill in the guys in CIC so they don't get shocked by any incoming calls."
"Sure thing Dad!" Austin said as he began to wake Brandon.
