EPISODE 5
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9
Aiden was happy he’d dodged the gay bullet. But now that it was time for bed, he had another problem. He wanted to sleep in his own bed. He hoped his father wouldn’t be upset with him for making that decision. Well, his Uncle Daddy had been great to talk to—every time Aiden thought Keegan would get angry, he never even came close to blowing a fuse. At least that was how it appeared to Aiden. Little did he know how often his father took a brief pause before making a decision or responding to an issue.
He finally decided the best thing to do was say nothing and just get under his own covers. He would let his father make it an issue and become more like the father he used to know.
“Good night, Daddy,” Aiden said as he rolled on his side and looked over to Keegan’s bed.
“Good night, son. Thanks for being so honest tonight. Hell, thanks for being a great son for the last two days. You have made your daddy a proud and happy man.” Keegan breathed a sigh of relief. He had been worried he’d end up hurting Aiden’s feelings if his son had asked to sleep with him and he said no.
He thought it best that they slept separately for no particular reason except that it felt right. He worried that Aiden would think it was a punishment for his coming out, which was not the case. His decision was a one-night decision only. But with Aiden staying in his own bed, he didn’t need to worry.
And over in his own bed, Aiden breathed a long sigh of relief that his father didn’t say anything on the topic. Spending two days with him had been so much greater than Aiden could ever have imagined.
The same was true of Keegan. There was more to Aiden than the sissy boy with the stuffed donkey he remembered in the courthouse or walking into the café in Mayfield for lunch. Keegan felt blessed to have Aiden as his son.
<Drake, David, and Sammy>
Drake learned quickly that he was not going to get what he wanted that night. What he wanted was for Jeffrey to give him his first true sober fuck. He wanted to rub his cheek against the eighteen-year-old’s and feel the scratch of his stubble. He wanted adult sex with an adult, even if he had been an adult for less than four months.
“Why can’t we do it?” Drake pleaded. “I want to do it, I know you want to do it, nobody’s going to get hurt, so what’s so wrong with it?”
“On the surface, nothing. It would be fun and harmless. There’s an adult I wanted to fuck for a long time but had to wait until I was eighteen. Just because we don’t see anything wrong with it doesn’t mean my lawyer dad downstairs would look at it the same way. He knows what kind of shit goes on upstairs in his house and he’s happy to look the other way, unless it’s illegal. Eighteen minus fourteen is four and four is bigger than three and the math says it’s not legal and that’s the way it is.”
“I’ll be fifteen in less than a month, so how can he even give a fuck about a fuck?”
“As dad would put it, a fuck is a fuck is a fuck and sex is sex is sex. So, see me in a couple of weeks and I’ll give you what we both want. Hell, even talking to you about this is probably illegal.”
“Yeah, great, you live here, and I live in Seattle, so how’s anything going to happen? Plus, somewhere along the line you’re going to be four years older than me and then it’s the same old shit.”
Jeffrey couldn’t help laughing. “Damn, Drake, we were talking about sex not a long-term relationship. Besides, once a legal relationship is established, the math isn’t relevant. Now, go join your peers and have a good time.”
Drake wanted to give it one last try. “We made out a little at the hot tub, so let’s just keep it going.”
“How about you give it up for now.”
“Ohhhhhhhhhkay. Are you going to watch us?”
“Nope, I’m staying totally out of it.”
Jeffrey watched Drake head for the stairs. He couldn’t help but admire the fine ass on the fourteen-year-old. For that matter, he couldn’t help but admire all aspects of the kid, from his overall looks to his bubbly personality. He had to admit he had developed a major crush on Sammy’s friend. Considering what he and Sammy did together, Jeffrey knew he was being hypocritical, but right then their age gap was three years, so who cared? Even his dad didn’t.
Despite his initial disappointment, Drake had to admit Jeffrey was right. Why should Jeffrey get in trouble messing with a boy he hardly knew? And Drake certainly did not want to be the one to get the older teen in trouble. He did wonder, however, if Jeffrey and Sammy messed around with each other.
He knocked on the door to Sammy’s bedroom and entered the room after hearing Sammy yell for him to come in. He saw Sammy and David on the bed, wearing just t-shirts and boxers desperately kissing each other. Drake could see David’s meat poking out of the pee hole of his boxers, the head slick with precum. Drake’s gloomy mood disappeared instantly. He quickly reached the same state of undress as the two boys in the bed.
“Why ain’t you guys naked?” Drake asked.
“We were saving the best for you,” Sammy replied after breaking the kiss. He pulled David’s t-shirt off and beckoned Drake to sit on the other side of him and stripped Drake of his t-shirt. David then pulled off Sammy’s and after that all three teens decided to just give in to the inevitable and stripped down naked.
While Drake didn’t get his wish for a sober fuck that night, he had a great time just rolling naked on the bed and on the floor with Sammy and David. They fondled and humped and licked and tickled and kissed and hugged and sucked and came and came and came some more—Sammy and Drake four times, David three.
“So, who’s the one sleeping in the guest room?” Sammy asked.
“I thought we were all crowding into your bed,” David said.
“We are, but one person has to claim he slept in the guest room if we’re asked, which would mean lying to my mom.”
“I can do that,” Drake said. “I mean, I’m heading back home tomorrow so it’s no biggie. Won’t be the first time in my life I’ve lied to the face of an adult.”
“What about the program of rigorous honesty business?” Sammy asked him.
“I try not to lie to Natalie and Keegan and I haven’t since the year started. And I can always do a Tenth Step and made amends to your mom if I need to. What would really suck would be if David was the one who got caught lying.”
<Sammy, David, and Drake>
After all the chat about who was sleeping where and lying to whom, it ended up not mattering. Lois had left for work when the boys woke up and she never asked who slept where.
Drake gave David a blow job while Sammy showered and then rubbed off on David’s butt cheeks while they showered together. “You are one sexy dude,” David said as Drake washed his cum off David’s ass. “You suck dick almost as good as Sammy,” he said with a sly smile.
“Oh, I can do it better, but I wanted to be sure you appreciated what you have in your boyfriend,” Drake replied good-naturedly.
When the boys went downstairs, naked of course, they found that Jeffrey had left for work. So, they chatted with each other and played with themselves while they ate. Sammy saw a note for Drake on the refrigerator. It was from Jeffrey and had his phone number and instructions for Drake to text him so he would have Drake’s information, which Drake did right away. He then went back to playing with his cock, thinking how cool it would be to have Jeffrey fuck him right upstairs in Jeffrey’s bed. Drake had a big-time crush on Sammy’s big brother.
After finishing breakfast and cleaning up the dining and kitchen areas, the three boys sat in the sunroom and seriously whacked their puds. They’d talked about sitting in the hot tub, but Keegan was scheduled to pick up Drake in an hour or so. A text from Aiden to Drake said they were running on time.
THURSDAY, APRIL 10
The ride from the ocean resort to Mayfield was routine. Aiden and Keegan chatted amiably about school, baseball (both professional and the Mayfield Middle School Titans), Drake, and even a bit about Keegan’s sobriety. Much of what Keegan said on that topic sounded like what Marty said, but not to the same depth. Keegan was still a baby when it came to leading a sober life.
When they got to Mayfield, Keegan drove to Sammy’s house and picked up Drake. Drake exchanged hugs with Sammy and David and sat in the front seat. Aiden still had to sit in the backseat because of his size. Then they stopped off at Aiden’s house, unloaded the kites and placed them in the garage for permanent storage later.
Aiden went upstairs with Drake to his room while Keegan waited for them downstairs. Aiden texted his boyfriend Nolan that he was home and then quickly undressed down to his underpants.
“Don’t I get a peek at a cock or ass?” Drake asked as Aiden dressed in his practice clothes.
“If I showed you, then you’d want to play with it, and I’ve got to get to the Nooner game,” Aiden grinned.
“Do I get a rain check?”
“Sure.”
“Good for when?”
“Good for whenever.”
Drake and Aiden traded a hard hug and then went down to join Keegan. Keegan drove to the high school, dropped Aiden off, and then he and Drake headed for Highway 12 and the long drive back to Seattle.
Aiden was happy. He’d had a good time with his daddy and his coming out seemed to have gone well. Now he was going to have a great time at the Nooner. The sky was gray, but the showers and drizzle of the day before were gone. The grounds crew had done a great job of getting the field in shape and the Mustangs were ready to play.
FRIDAY, JUNE 27
Aiden never thought that The Fourth Dimension AA group would ever have anything to do with him. But an invitation to a party along with a not so good baseball weekend and a bunch of little things going wrong had put him in a bad space that he wanted to escape.
Aiden was in a foul mood as he sat in the back seat of the Odyssey. The Yard Goats had just been clobbered 12-4 by a team from Pasco in the Tri-Cities Twelve and Under Invitational Tournament. Lance had been the starting pitcher and hadn’t fooled anyone on the Pasco team. He gave up six runs in two and two-thirds innings. Then Mackenzie “Mac” Dixon, who had moved to Mayfield in March, gave up four runs, and Miles gave up two more. As for Aiden, he went 0-for-4, striking out two times and had two errors at third which helped the Pasco team score four runs. He had no doubt in his mind that it was the worst game he’d ever played in and been part of in his life.
Miles, Trent, Gordy, Mason, and Muddy were also riding in the mini-van. Larry was driving and noted the depressed silence. The team had a 10:30 loser-out game in the morning. Larry told Phil that it could have been worse—they could have been in the bracket that would have put them in the 8:30 game. A loss in the loser-out game would make them two and done with a long drive back to Mayfield ahead of them. The depressing part was that everyone knew the Goats were a very good team, but they certainly didn’t look it in the just completed game. That loss dropped their record to 7-2 for the season.
Marty would tell me to get over the game and be ready for tomorrow, Aiden thought. But Marty wasn’t playing in his first ever weekend tournament away from home. Marty wasn’t the one who had been looking forward to messing around with Gordy on a hotel bed while Miles and Mason had fun on the other bed. Sure, two extra beds had been rolled into the room, but the boys had agreed that they would not be used.
It looked like now the night would be a snack in the motel café and heading for bed. Aiden was certain that they were still going to sleep two to a bed; he was also certain they wouldn’t be messing around. Although, with Mason you never knew.
Still, Aiden thought it was nice to be able to sleep with Gordy. Even though they kept their underpants on, they both enjoyed the warm feel of each other’s smooth-skinned torsos as they snuggled. While Gordy boned up after getting into bed, Aiden didn’t. Even snuggling with his best friend didn’t make him horny. Aiden fell asleep thinking how strange it was that he could sleep with Gordy and not have sex or even get a boner even though Miles and Mason were obviously doing something sexual in the other bed. He learned later that Mason had gone under the sheet to get into a sixty-nine with Miles.
SATURDAY, JUNE 28
The next morning the Goats were two-and-out. Aiden started the game at pitcher. Because of the upcoming July 4th holiday, the Goats only had one league game the next week, allowing Scott and Connor to use their pitching without having to think about innings for league play. Collin was slated to start their lone league game and would not pitch in the tournament unless absolutely necessary. The team was allowed one pickup pitcher and chose Titus Willis, a sixth grader on the Kentburg team. They would have loved picking up Keith, but he was scheduled to start the Stingers’ Monday league game.
While Aiden loved sleeping with Gordy, doing so took him out of his usual night before pitching routine. His morning routine was off, too. Larry told Aiden he would do fine, but Aiden wasn’t convinced.
Aiden couldn’t get into any kind of zone and when the game against the Yakima Tiger Cats started, he felt totally unprepared. He gave up two runs in the first inning. In the second he got the first batter out, then a double and two walks loaded the bases. Aiden struck out the next batter for the second out, but then gave up a hard-hit single which scored two runs. Coach Scott could see that Aiden didn’t have it that day and pulled him in favor of Scott Keller. Aiden left the mound with the Yard Goats down 4-0.
Scott was able to stop the bleeding and the scored stayed 4-0. The Goats battled back and ended up losing 5-4. Scott and Connor would normally have moved Aiden to third base where Jared Finn had started, but Aiden’s body language told them that keeping him on the bench seemed like a better idea.
As a result, Aiden went from partial sulk to full sulk mode. He’d had one at bat in the game and struck out, which made him 0-for-5 for the weekend, striking out three times. The tournament committee had reserved the party room at a nearby pizza restaurant for the three days of the tournament. After the game, Scott and Connor told the team (and the parents) they would go to the motel and check out and then have a team lunch before everyone headed home.
“I know it’s been a disappointing weekend,” Scott told them, “but I hope you all still managed to have fun. There’s not much use playing a game if you don’t have fun playing it.” He looked directly at Aiden during his finish. Aiden continued to sulk.
As boys and parents walked to their cars, Phil sidled up to Aiden. “We need to talk.”
“Why? I know what you’re going to say. I sucked and we lost and I don’t like it. Now we’ve got nothing to talk about and we’re going to lunch anyway, so there.”
“I wasn’t planning on talking right now. I just wanted you to understand that we need to talk.”
“Well, I don’t understand,” Aiden huffed. He hurried away from Phil and to the van.
When they arrived at the pizza parlor, the twins invited Aiden to sit with them. He ignored them and, to the surprise of everybody, sat next to Mackenzie Dixon instead of his friends.
“I heard you’re having a party,” Aiden said. He hadn’t received an invitation, but Miles and Gordy had both mentioned it to him.
“It’s gonna have alcohol and since everybody knows you don’t drink it or go to drinking parties, I never said nothing to you,” Mackenzie told him.
“Gordy and Miles knew about it and they don’t go to parties or drink either.”
“I guess they overheard me and Russell talking about it. The only ones on the team coming are Russell, Jared, Muddy, and Yonder. Roger’s coming and some girls might. Autumn and Carolyn will be coming for sure.”
“I want to come.”
“If you come, you gotta drink. You don’t gotta get drunk, but you gotta drink. Remember it don’t take much to get us drunk cuz we’re kids. And my ‘rents are cool with this and dad will make sure nobody drinks too much. It would be way cool if you could come, cuz I’ve learned that everybody thinks you’re the coolest even if sometimes you think you’re better than everybody else. Now you can become like us, which is ultra-cool.”
“I just have to figure out how to get there without my dads finding out. We’re all staying overnight, right?”
“Yeah. But why are you changing your mind about keggers?”
“Cuz I feel like it.”
“Good enough reason.”
“And you said Muddy was going? I didn’t know he drank.”
“He’ll be trying to for the first time, too.”
Their chat was interrupted by Trent and Scott Keller sitting at their table. The two older boys didn’t like what they were seeing. They had a lot of respect for Aiden and didn’t like seeing him sitting with a lowlife like Mackenzie. Neither of them liked him from the day he’d moved to Mayfield. They were disappointed he had been selected to play for the Goats, although they had to admit he was a good player even if he was an asshole.
Trent and Scott were not alone in feeling like Mac was a problem on the team. They thought all spring that Russell was going to work on his attitude during summer like he had during the school season. But Mac had worked on Russell’s weaknesses and had brought Muddy, Yonder, and Jared into his corner as well. They’d overheard him saying negative things about how the coaches had it in for his group of friends and how guys like Aiden, Gordy, Trent, and Scott were pecker heads for kissing the coaches’ asses.
And now Mac’s group appeared to have Aiden in their clutches. Trent and Scott saw how Aiden had gotten into a bad space on the trip and were ready to talk to him to find out what if anything was bugging him outside of baseball, but they had to get him away from Mac first. The scene at the table bothered them because they thought of Aiden as being a strong personality.
“Hey guys, what’s up?” Trent asked in an almost overfriendly manner as he sat next to Aiden.
“Nothin’ much, just talking with my bro, Aiden,” Mac answered.
Aiden was feeling uncomfortable. He was in uncharted territory and he didn’t want his teammates to know what he was thinking.
He recalled that he had spent the previous Saturday with Keegan and Drake hiking in the Clark Pass area. During their stop for lunch, Drake brought up the subject of how he and Keegan used to get drunk together, usually with Natalie, but sometimes just the two of them. They both agreed that what they had now, doing different things together, like this hike, was so much more fun. Drake told how he and Keegan went shopping for hiking gear just before school let out for the summer. Aiden said his dads had purchased his shoes and a good backpack, along with his camping gear for Christmas.
Aiden decided to speak honestly about his father getting him drunk three times when he was seven and eight. He told how the same held true for him—that he could trust his father and do fun things like fly kites or this hike.
Then as he, Keegan, and Drake finished their lunch, Aiden silently recalled how, in the past week, he had been thinking of the one other time he got drunk—a time he had told no one about. It had been at the foster home he hated. The Muncies had left him alone with their other foster son, Parker, for the evening. Parker was thirteen and had served some time in juvenile detention. It was something they weren’t supposed to do, but the Muncies had no problem not following the rules of Child Protective Services.
That night had started sticking in Aiden’s head for some reason. He recalled that as soon as the Muncies left, Parker grabbed the key to the locker cabinet and pilfered a full bottle of vodka. “Want some?” he asked Aiden.
“What is it?” Aiden asked.
“Booze. Vodka booze.”
“I’ve drunk booze.”
“For real? Did you get drunk?” Aiden nodded. “Want to try it again?”
“As long as my daddy isn’t making me do it I’ll do it and yeah I think I was drunk.”
“He’s not here and I’m not making you do it, but I think if you drank it with me it would make you very grown-up.”
“For real?”
“For real.”
When Aiden took his first sip, he winced at the taste, but he relished the feeling of warmth going down his esophagus and into his stomach. He loved the next sip as well and the feeling of warmth flowing through him. Suddenly he was grown up, just like Parker said. Suddenly the sadness he felt was lifted. The feeling of emptiness created by the death of his mother was filled as he took another swallow of vodka.
“Damn, bro, you’re really into drinking that,” Parker said before taking his fourth swig. “I got a real buzz going. How about you?”
“I feel grown up like you,” Aiden slurred. He pulled off his jeans and started dancing around Parker’s bedroom. “I’m doing a Captain Underpants dance,” he giggled. He twisted and twirled and fell to the floor. “Oh, I fall down.” His giggling turned to laughter and hiccups.
“Do a naked big boy dance,” Parker requested. He was slurring as well.
Aiden staggered to his feet and reached for the bottle, which Parker handed to him. He took another sip, pulled his underpants down his thighs and then fell again. “The room is all spinny and I feel dizzy and…and…I gotta puke.”
Somehow Parker got Aiden to the toilet in time for him to kneel in front of it and vomit up his dinner. Aiden then crawled to Parker’s bedroom and passed out. Parker wanted to get sexual with the young boy, but as soon as he got on his bed, he joined the young boy in blackness. When the Muncies arrived home, they didn’t bother checking on their two foster sons. The next morning, Mrs. Muncie thought they must be coming down with the flu and acted accordingly. Mr. Muncie never bothered checking what was in his liquor cabinet.
By the next weekend, a temporary foster son, Jack, was living with them. He was twelve and Parker saw a sexual conquest. Jack was no stranger to sex and let Parker know he would be a willing partner. “I’m gonna go fuck Jack,” he told Aiden. “Do you wanna watch?”
Aiden shook his head. “I want a bottle,” Aiden said.
“Oh, wow, you like that shit, don’t you?” Parker grabbed the liquor key off its hook and grabbed a bottle of scotch and a bottle of vodka. He handed the vodka to Aiden and then went to his room with Jack. “You can come in and watch any time you want,” he called back to Aiden.
Aiden didn’t want to watch, he wanted to get the warm, happy feeling back. He didn’t know why, but he stripped naked. He sat on the uncomfortable chair in his room and took two sips from the bottle, reveling in the warmth even as he hated the taste. He had been in a blackout when he’d puked the Saturday before and remembered none of it.
He took another sip and stopped. He knew drinking out of the bottle was wrong. Without Parker to goad him on and tell him how wonderful and grown up he was, Aiden thought more about being caught than getting drunk. He’d taken three sips, which was enough to make him a little drunk, so he took a couple more sips so he could be more drunk. He then stood up, weaved a little, and staggered to the bathroom where he emptied the bottle down the sink. That was the last time he had tasted alcohol. He went back to his room and dropped to his bed.
He thought about getting up to see what it was Parker and Jack were doing. But he didn’t like either one of the older boys, so he closed his eyes and was gone to the world.
When the Muncies returned they found Parker and Jack naked and drunk in Parker’s bedroom. They knew there was little they could do as far as reporting them since they should never have left the boys alone. They did breathe a sigh of relief that they hadn’t gotten young Aiden involved.
But even though those thoughts ran through his head, Aiden didn’t mention any of it to his father and Drake. He had decided it would remain his secret for life. Since the memory had started eating at him, Aiden had felt a combination of embarrassment and desire.
And now, sitting next to Mac and Russell at lunch, he knew why he wanted to go to the drinking party. When he drank at the Muncie’s the emotions he felt about the death of his mother disappeared. His bad play that weekend, plus his poor play in their last game before the tournament, were eating at him. He felt he wasn’t as good as everyone, including himself, thought he was.
His confidence had disappeared and was replaced by the insecurity of a young adolescent. Aiden knew exactly what he wanted—he wanted to feel the same numbness to emotion that he had received as a little boy from a bottle of vodka.
