“GET OUT OF MY ROOM!” Aidyn threw a pillow at the door. I closed it before it could hit me.
All I wanted was to see if he wanted to play a video game or something. Ever since he started high school he's been like this. It's like he's too cool for me now. Ever since I can remember we were friendly towards each other. The longer he was in high school though the more he changed.
We would play games all the time. He would teach me how to play the sports he played. He would call me Sky all the time, he invented the nickname. He was the best big brother. I mean we had our fights but it's nothing like now.
He started being an ass once he got into high school. It wasn't instant, but over time we would spend less and less time together. I don't get it one bit.
So I moped into the living room and turned on the Xbox 360. Since I was playing my myself I started up Skyrim. It's always fun to play when I'm bored.
Shortly after I started my phone went off. It went silent after just a few rings; a text. So I ignored it and continued playing. It went off again after a few minutes. And finally it went off again but this time it was a phone call.
“Hello?”
“ANSWER YOUR TEXTS BOY!!” It was my friend Booker. Booker is my best friend and I spend 90% of my time with him.
“Sorry I'm playing Skyrim. I was gonna check in a sec.”
“Check when you get them. Anyways, I have your attention so you better get your butt over to my place right now!” This is Booker... Very demanding.
“Why right now?”
“My mom has a neighbour kid coming over and I don't want it to be awkward.” His mom sets Booker up on 'blind hangouts' all the time. It's her way of keeping him on his toes.
“I'll be over in a bit. How long do I have?”
“Like twenty minutes. So get your butt moving!” He hung up the phone. Left without a word... good thing it's the weekend.
I saved the game and found dad. “Hey dad, can I go over to Booker's?”
He checked his watch. “Be home in time for dinner. Family dinner tonight, no exceptions.” He shooed me off. I wasted no time and gathered my things.
I got up to my room and quickly gathered my things. I opened my bedroom door and there stood a boxer wearing Aidyn. He looked at my stunned face and rolled his eyes, “Take a picture, it'll last longer.” He went into the bathroom and shut the door.
I rushed out of the house and grabbed my bike. I quickly made my way over to Booker's house. He doesn't live too far away so I was there in just a couple of minutes.
I come over so often that I walked right in. I was greeted by Booker's mom and some lady. “Hey Skylar, Booker is up in his room.”
“Thank you!” I went up the stairs and to his bedroom.
Booker lives with just his mom. He's never known his dad and never really wanted to. He's the splitting image of his mom though, he hates it. It's okay though I think he's awesome.
I opened his bedroom door and froze. Sitting on his bed was Greyson, the kid I've been helping around school, staring right at me. Booker looked over at me and jumped up, “Sky!”
Greyson got a questioning look on his face, “Sky?”
“Ya, this is my friend Skylar Scott.” Booker looked over at me, “Greyson here is blind so he can't see you.”
“I know what blind means, Booker.” I looked over at Greyson, “I didn't imagine seeing... meeting you here.”
Greyson smiled, “You can say seeing, Sky. I didn't think you'd be here either.”
Booker was confused as he could be. “WAIT!!! You two know each other?”
“Yes. Sky has been showing me around the school. I have some of it memorized. I can get to each of my classes without much issues now.” It's true, I'm mostly just there to make sure he gets to the right place.
Booker looked less but still confused. “So he's the reason you've been to busy to hang out with me at school?” I nodded, “Asshole.”
“Who me?” Greyson looked toward Booker.
“Nope! Skylar, definitely Skylar.” Greyson giggled.
“Nyah” Greyson burst into laughter and rolled off the bed. His face was funny when he fell. In a fit of giggles I asked him, “Are you okay?”
He was still laughing, “Ya.” We settled down, eventually. “I could just imagine your face with your tongue sticking out. It was priceless!”
Suddenly the bedroom door opened, “Is everyone okay?” It was Greyson's mom, presumably.
“Ya mom, we're fine.” He let out a giggle. “I swear its fine in here.” She looked very confused. I mean Greyson was on the ground having giggle fits. I think I would be worried about my blind kid too. She left unconvinced but nonetheless left us be.
Booker sat in his desk chair, “So what's it like being blind?”
I look over at him and mouth to him, 'What are you doing!?'
'It's a genuine question!' It's a good thing we're good at reading lips. 'Look he's thinking about it right now.'
“It's weird, to be honest.” He was going to answer it!? “The whole theory that when you loose a seance the others get better is just a theory. What happens is you pay more attention to your other senses.
“So for me, I don't have sight and I pay more attention to my touch. I read faster than my mom and dad and they have eyes that work. I would like to think I can make accurate pictures of someone just by feeling their face. I try not to wonder around too much.”
After that Booker and I both had our faces 'felt' by Greyson. It was weird him touching our face but it made him happy.
We hung out for a bit and just talked about things. I learned that Greyson loves music and really wants to make some but is impaired to do so. He listens to all kinds of music, like seriously all kinds. Pop, Rock, Metal, Alternative, classic Rock, EVERYTHING!! He's so cool.
Greyson went home about an hour or so after he fell off the bed. He said he was super happy to hung out with us. He said he wanted to do it more at school. He left with a huge grin on his face.
When he left we started talking about how it would suck to be blind. The conversation didn't last very long. We went and played some games together until it was time for me to head home. “I gotta get going. Family dinner tonight.”
Booker had lost in Soul Calibur again. He was laying on his back, his head hanging over his bed. “Wanna sleep over after you're done eating dinner. I'm sure mom won't care.” He flipped off his bed and walked with me to the living room. “Mom, can Sky sleepover tonight?”
“If it's okay with his parents. Will he be staying for dinner?”
“No Mrs. Lawson, I have a family dinner tonight and have to go home before I can stay for the night.”
“Okay, just call to tell us if you're going to be here or not.” I nodded and said my good-byes. I made it home in record time and still had a good half an hour before dinner.
I found mom and dad in the kitchen. Dad was reading the paper, mom was cooking. “I'm home.”
Mom turned around, “Welcome back honey. How was Booker's?”
“It was good! Greyson was there.”
Dad looked up at me. “Greyson?”
I nodded, mom answered though, “Sky has been showing Greyson Payne around the school. Greyson is blind, dear.” Dad smiled and continued reading the paper. “Go wash up for dinner, both of you.”
I went to leave but stopped before I left the kitchen, “Oh, can I sleep over at Booker's tonight?”
Mom looked over to dad, “I see no problem with it. As long as his mom is fine with it.” Dad agreed. He doesn't usually say much, just nods.
“Thanks!” I ran up to the bathroom to wash my hands. I took the steps two at a time like normal. When I got to the bathroom Aidyn was in there, in just a towel. I was mesmerized.
Aidyn noticed me, “You like what you see, or something?” it shook me out of staring at his chest. “What do you want?”
“Dinner is almost ready... I'm here to wash up before we eat like every time we eat.” He rolled his eyes and exited the bathroom. I did what had to be done in the bathroom and made my way back downstairs.
Aidyn was the last one to get to the dinner table... again. We have one family dinner a week to catch up with everything that's going on. Dad is usually working past dinner time so he doesn't have dinner with us often. Aidyn... he's never liked the idea of sharing.
Dad always starts off with what he's been up to. “Nothing much this week. Mostly just noise complaints, a couple of drunks here and there. It's been pretty calm lately.”
Aidyn likes talking about other people's stuff though. “Boring town is boring...”
Dad looked at Aidyn, “You seem to keep yourself entertained.” Aidyn rolled his eyes, “Sky, tell me about Greyson.”
I immediately piped up, “Aaron was showing me around the school,”
Mom looked over at me, “Aaron was showing you around?”
“She volunteered.” Aidyn replied. “Aaron Schwarz is an acquaintance of mine.”
“Anyways!” I continued, “After homeroom past the office again and there he was leaning against the wall with a sad face. So we found out he was blind and dropped his phone and it was kicked down the hallway. I offered to show him around the school and he accepted.”
Mom had a huge smile on her face, “I'm very proud of you and I'm sure Greyson is very appreciative of your help.” I blushed and started eating so I didn't have to talk anymore.
“Work has been exhausting but I'm sure I'll get used to it the more I do it.”
Aidyn smiled, “How many kids have you seen in just this week?”
“Too many.” Mom replied with a sigh. Aidyn and I laughed. “What's happened with you Aidyn?”
Aidyn was in the middle of a bite. He swallowed and spoke, “Nothing really, been hanging out with Noah a bit more.”
Dad looked at him, “How was the party last weekend?”
He shrugged, “Kinda boring. I didn't drink or anything. I was just hanging out the entire time, I swear.”
“And who is this Noah boy?”
“Noah is Aaron's cousin. He's in grade 9 and we're becoming friends. I saw him around last year but didn't really have a reason to talk to him. He was at Aaron's party playing video games. We ended up talking and are now becoming fast friends.” Aidyn spoke so quickly, like it was rehearsed.
“Aidyn's got a crush on him!” I spoke up in jest.
His glare would kill the neighbourhood cat. “Screw off Skylar.”
With a slam on the table Dad spoke, “Both of you!” We both shrunk in our seats. “First: Skylar, it is not okay to make comments like that. Second: Aidyn, even if Skylar is being rude you should know better.”
“So he's allowed to be rude but I'm not. That's fair.”
“That's not what I said, Aidyn.” Dad and Aidyn had a mini staring contest... Dad won.
This is how life is regularly now... Aidyn is a dick and Dad calls him out on it. I know what I said wasn't really okay but we used to be able to kid like that. In private but still. I wish I had the old Aidyn back...
